I have read a bit about guys getting the glock 21 and just buying the 10mm barrel, mags, and possibly the extractor. Any reason that I would want to just get the 20? The option to switch quickly back to the .45 seems appealing, especially with ammo pricing. Anything else to consider? Anybody have an opinion who has done this?

If you get the G21 in 45 you'll have to buy a conversion barrel in 10mm. The Glock factory 10mm barrel will not work in a G21. If you buy the G20 in 10mm, it will not shoot 45 unless you buy a whole new slide and barrel. The breech face on the G20 slide is too small for the 45 case. The G20 and G21 frames are the same, the slides are different.

Yes, if you want both calibers, you will need both slides.
Just easier to buy both guns.
They will feel exactly the same with a bit of tuning.
( only the 10 will kick and hit harder )

Is there a reason you want both? The 10mm has alot more power. If being used for defense over penetration would be an issue with the 10. I owned a couple model 20's. They shot well but they do have a fairly large grip. Used to feed them doubletap's 200 grainers. Great woods round if you want to carry an auto.

I would go with a G20 and an after market 40 S$W barrel, if I had to make a choice between the two Glocks. 40 ammo is cheaper unless you have acess to free 45 ammo. If that's the case I would get the G21 with a KKM 10mm conversion barrel.

Give the SF(Short Frame) G20 a whirl. Noticeably thinner grip from that of the normal 20/21, at least to my smallish hands.

I currently have a .45 and I am comfortable shooting it. My idea was if I were to switch to the glock 21, I'd still have the .45 but also be able to step it up to 10 mm for a more powerful home defense gun and for the rare chance of walking through a bear's back yard. I hadn't thought about the getting the 20 and shooting the .40 though. Does that require the same type of conversion?

All you need to shoot .40 S&W ammo through your Glock 20 is the conversion barrel.

If your looking at Glocks, please check the grip first.
My G 20 is a SF and fits great.
