Microsoft security essentials, free and actually works without being a resource hog. Between myself, dad and the office I keep up about a half dozen computers that no telling what they do with them including click every link and email known to Nigeria and so far we haven't lost 30 minutes of time on those combined since we went to it.

I have been with Norton at home and work, and never had an issue. My kid, at the suggestion of his high school computer instructor, went with some freeware. When his unit blew up, we installed Norton and it locked up on about its 2,400 th discovery. Had to scrub and reformat his unit. I'd offer that one gets what he pays for. When sharware goes to hell, who does one call for support?

When initializing a unit, don't let it access the web period, without first installing and updating ones anti virus software.

If your running "Windows" get "Security Essentials"
for free here...

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/security-essentials

It's from Microsoft and it self updates right along with Windows...

You might want to run your anti virus scanner from "safe mode with networking". If the virus is blocking .exe files, you can use superantispyware portable version on a thumb drive as it is a .com file and won't be blocked. Down load it from their site on a clean puter. Just make sure you do it from safe mode.

To get to "safe mode with networking", just re-boot your puter and after the "post messages" and before windows starts press F8. I usually just toggle F8 after the initial messages and can get there.

Trend Micro. Ran across it at a large defense contractor I consulted at many years ago. Been running it ever since. Never, never have any of my machines been infected with anything. The license lets you install on up to 3 computers.

MS MSE here too. best I've used. I posted this method before a couple weeks ago. That win7 malware prevents .exe files from running. I could not launch MSE.

I downloaded SpyBot S&D (spybot.exe). Rename that downloaded file spybot.bat. By changing the extension from .exe to .bat (that is a batch file extension and will launch like an .exe file. Run SpyBot S&D n'till it finds that win7 malware. Good to go.

Go with Microsoft Security Essentials has been my best experience when I have to use a Microsoft. Usually I just stick with Ubuntu and avoid problems.

Norton or McAfee will eat your system resources - especially Norton.

MS Essentials or Kaspersky have a much smaller footprint.

Norton and McAfee suck dog ass, Kaspersky is the best pay for use out there, Avast is one of the best free ones, Microsofts security essentials is pretty good too. To remove that Damnable Win 7 Av, download combofix and run it. Les
