Are you buying a gun to keep taking it apart? Or are you buying a gun to shoot it as intended. Another crappy thing about Savage...those God awful looonngggg actions required a one piece base or the scope rings will be too far apart to fit a lot of scopes.

Dogcatcher, the new Savages are better guns than the one you bought when you were 15. (Who was president then? Nixon?) Savage has improved greatly the past 5-10 years.

My 300 WSM 11Fl shot into 3/4" right out of the box with Fec premium loads. No recoil lugs, no bedding, no nothing. With the factory tupperware stock.

I replaced the stock this year, because I could..with an MPI stock, which made the rifle much better, IMHO.

I think you really need to look at current Savage products. Obviously you haven't heard that Savage also makes a short action AGAIN . There was a time when Savages were bad. Those are not the rifles people are talking about now. There was a time when Winchester and Remington offered pretty poor guns as well.

Until you do maybe you should refrain from any discussion involving these firearms. Sean

You are right, The average Savage is much more accurate than the average Ruger.

I have a Savage 110 and a Mossberg 500, which I find quite comparable in terms of machine work, fit, and finish to my Ruger 77 Mk II all weather.

The prices of Rugers often overlap those of Savage, but then so do the entry level Howas, Winchester 70's, and Remington ADL's.

Rugers often get unfailry bashed on these boards, hence the mention.

You could always buy one of those Remington 710's, I'm sure it would please the dedicated Remington fans.

I just saw my 1st Stevens this week. For the price I dont know how you could beat it . . .especially if it is a good shooter. That being said, unless I could not afford better, or wanted it for a rough use rifle, I would not want it. I dont like rifles where you have to work the bolt with an open hand, or get your thumb smacked against the scope. It also looks kind of weird, even though it is safe, where the bold enters the chamber. Plus this one felt like it had a 6 pound trigger. Admittedly many higher price rifles have hard triggers also. I would probably look around for a used rifle before buying one.

Triggers can be adjusted (and in my case, they will be). My Stevens 200 had a 6 3/4 lb trigger. I ran out of adjustment at 4 3/4 lbs. Put a Rifle Basix on it. (Currently at 2 lbs.)

I just bought a Rem 700 SPS stainless in .300 Win Mag the other day. Gun weighs 7 1/4 lbs, trigger weighed about 7! (While I'm at it- with the SPS, my first group was way under 1"!) Oh, and I adjusted it's trigger to 3 1/2 lbs first.

I just bought one in 300 Win mag from SIR in Winnipeg for $299 Canadian. They also have them in 270, 7mm mag and 30-06 for the same price. How's that for a great deal!

Really didn't need it or even want it, but just to see how bad they really are.

Supposed to be here this week. I'll get back to you after it gets here and I have a chance to shoot it.

Since everyone is talking in opinions heres mine,

bought a stevens 200 for my daughter in 25.06. Throws a great pattern all 3 within an 1.15 in. at 100 yds even when downloaded to .257 roberts speed with the first try at hand loading. I expect better results with working the loads and range time. When i fired it with factory rounds i was getting .75 in. groups at 100 yds.

It is light and manageble and the feeding is smooth. just because i want to play with it i am planning on putting a fiberglass stock and working the trigger. The trigger is stiff but breaks clean. And for someone on a budget I would really recommend it.

it may be a 270.00 dollar gun but it is worth more then that to my little girl. and again just my .02

Funny how everyone talks about the great price they got, then mentions that they are upgrading the stock "just because" but not because it needed it. Yeah right.

A gun is not inexpensive anymore when you sink $200 to make it how it should have been from the get go.

It is nice to see how well a rifle shoots before you pay for the stock. And the stock doesn't have to be replaced to have a great hunting rifle. I hunted with a tupperware ADL stock for several years before replacing it.
The Stevens is not a show rifle, but looks like a great rifle for those of us who carry one year around and insist on accuracy.

So Big Drift paid $270 for a donor rifle which he can exchange barrels in an evening, get a stock as his kid grows into the rifle, and even have the pleasure of jewelling that UGLY etched Stevens off the bolt.

Oh yeah, his little girl gets to whack her first deer tomorrow morning.

The joy of being a rifle loonie is your equipment becomes a living being that you can watch grow over time with modification and load development. Unlike the "my gun is a hammer crowd" that wipes 'er down after the season and checks zero the week before (not that there is anything wrong with that), BD has found an entry level piece that will be a very nice long term project.

Yep - I have to replace the stock on my Vanguard. I should have just bought the "sub-MOA Vanguard with the decent stock - by the time, I'm done, I will have spent that much anyway! That would be my advice to anyone buying a Vanguard - buy the good one to start with!

Everyone agrees that Savage rifles can SHOOT. I applaud Savage /Stevens for making it possible for some guys(that don't make a lot of money) to take their sons or daughters to buy their first NEW gun, and not have to worry about it not doing its job.Making our sport more affordable to everyone is nothing but a win-win situation. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
