I've got a short action BLR, in .358. Its an all steel gun and I prefer them to the aluminum receiver guns. I've been kicking around picking up a used long action gun in 30-06 or 270, maybe 7mm Mag. I was wondering if any of you guys hunt with one and how do you like it. I'm guessing they're gonna be a little on the heavy side for a levergun, but do they balance well? Accurate? Thanks.

My only experience with a long action was in 30-06 and after trying it I decided not to get one. Trying ment just working the action. I am 6'4" and as a friend described me one time with "Orangutan Arms". I thought it was awkward working the lever. It felt too long for me. But, maybe it was because I was used to Winchesters.
I did own a short sction BLR in .257 Roberts and really liked it.

I almost mirror the last poster. Love my 257 in the short action, hated my 7 mag in the long.

Thanks guys.. I was really hoping not to hear that. I really do love my short action .358 but I kinda had a feeling there was something not so great about the long actions.

never had a short action, so i guess i'm the odd fellow out with my "ss blr td 30/06"...smooth with the so called long action> feels fine to me.... guess my browningII .22 lever comes in at a super shot action.

Hmmmm.. ATValaska. I'm guessing yours is one of the newer guns. Maybe they're light enough with the Aluminum receiver.

I have a BLR Lighting model in 30-06. I love it, It is light enough, handles great, points great, although I use the open sights. I took three hand loads to the range, 150's, 165's and 180's. The 150's shot about an inch high at 100 yards, the others shot way to high to be useful. If I want to shoot them I would have to mount a scope.

I love the short actions, used three...one a .308, one a .358, and a friends .257 Roberts.
I have never tried a long action, but since I love levers, a .300 H&H and a .358 Norma would be fun calibers to try.

Other than wanting one, with a 358win why would you need an '06. If anything the 358 has the '06 beat shooting heavy bullets, you don't need any more horsepower that's for sure .

My sister-in-law hunts in Wyoming with her BLR in 7mm-08. Out to about 300 yards or so, there is little difference from 270 trajectory. Recoil is moderate for such a hard hitting cartridge. Sherwood

Yeah.. its just a matter of wanting one. I really like the 30-06, but I don't want to carry around a gun that handles like a tank.

Look at a BLR in a 300 WSM! I like the steel receiver guns, but to be honest I've never owned one of the others.

Having tried the long action a number of times, it continues to have the balance and grace of a grubbing hoe. I'll stay with my three short actioned BLR's, as I have since 1974. Also, remember that with today's super bullets, there is effectively no difference between the .308 and .30-06 in the field.
