Well last Friday I stuck my foot in the single shot pool and purchased this Ruger #1. I have a 1.5-4 Vortex scope to mount this week.

I've no experience with that chambering... Can one also shoot .454 Casull ammo in it? Or .45 Colt Long?

I believe so Grasshopper...that would make it a worthwhile addition. I have LOTS of .45 Colt ammo!

Fun gun! Just be forewarned, 54Woody, they are addictive! It may be your first, but I doubt it will be your last...

I wanted the .460 because it is one of the handgun cartridges legal for deer hunting in a rifle in the state of IN. Not sure on the .454 Casull or the .45 Colt. I bought it to shoot the .460 S&W Mag. and the balistics are near a 45/70.

Todd,

I thought so.... I have a Browning Lo-Wall Traditional Hunter in .45 Colt... I've often thought about chambering it out to .454 Casull... smile

Yep the 460 will take 454 and 45 colt. I picked up a 475 Linebaugh version of this rifle last year. Fun gun. I got lucky and found one with nice wood. Most of the 460s and 475s were rather plain.

Nice rifle, Woody. It will be a dandy in the swamps and thick stuff.

Even if you can fire 454 Casull and 45 Colt in it, I would suggest using only 460 cases. You can easily load them down to 45 Colt level. The problem with firing cases shorter than the chamber is that it erodes the front part of the chamber. If you fire a lot of short cases, you might have trouble when switching back to the full-length 460 cases. This would be especially true of the 454 Casull rounds because they are WAY more intense than factory 45 Colt ammo. Also, accuracy can suffer as the bullet is basically unsupported as it rattles through the space between the short case mouth and the chamber throat. You might get by firing a few, but I would not make a habit of it, especially the 454 Casull rounds. eek

Whew, you scared me...glad that's a .460 S&W. A .460 Weatherby would give me nightmares.

I recently put together a TC Encore "carbine". The barrel started as a 15" pistol barrel and the previous owner had a muzzle brake added and permanently attached bringing the length to 16.75".
I have a 1.5-5x32 SG scope on it and so far it is grouping the Hornady 200 gr very well.
I'm hoping it will be the ticket for the over abundant bears we have in the thick cover in the N Ga. mountain area next season.
