Figured I'd jump quickly before Melvin's prices go up @ 1/1/12 and decided to splurge for a 223. Going to use it for some yotes, possibly deer and just general plinking.

The decision that I have is regarding the twist, Melvin said ideally for my use I might be wise to go with 1:12 - that should cover the bases well for the 50/52 grain stuff. Not sure if it'll work for a 60 partitions however.

Anyway guys, my deposit is in and I'm all ears if you think I should change anything.

BTW: he pushed me to a #1 @ 22", with such a small diameter hole he said there isn't much of a need to go w/#2. Never had spoken with him before but he is a class act!

Thoughts?

I don't think you give up anything to go a 1/8 twist and having it throated to reach the lands at 2.450. You can shoot 40-80 gr bullets. This will fulfill your quest to shoot anything from yotes to deer to shooting way out there.

1-8 all the way and never look back. If you're a yankee you could go 1-9" with no one looking funny at you. I'd not contemplate anything slower.

You can do everything with a faster twist that you can with a slower, but not the other way around.

My 223AI's have been throated from ~2.4-2.5" ttl w/a 75Amax and anything in that ballpark will still let you seat a 50Vmax in the lands. 1-8"twist is for sure the way to go, there's no reason to hamstring yourself with a slow twist.

Change it to 1-8" twist.

For all the above reasons......

I agree with the change to a 1-8 twist as well.
