Does anyone know what the early production numbers were for the 336? I have a E (1948) stamped model and was just wonderin.

From one of my earlier posts:
Maybe you will find some use for this list of Serial Number Prefixes, which my father first made me aware of, some years ago. I believe it applies to all Marlin lever actions (including the models 36, 336, 39A and 39M) that were manufactured from 1946 through 1989. One of these days, I'll have to check some more recently manufactured guns to learn whether or not the prefix system was used beyond 1989. Use this as a general guide, only, as the prefixes were not always changed on the first day of January of each year. Some prefixes were used from August of one year to August of the next year, for example. Here it is:
1946 ... C 1947 ... D 1948 ... E 1949 ... F 1950 ... G 1951 ... H 1952 ... J 1953 ... K 1954 ... L 1955 ... M 1956 ... N 1957 ... P 1958 ... R 1959 ... S 1960 ... T 1961 ... U 1962 ... V 1963 ... W 1964 ... Y and Z
1965 ... AA 1966 ... AB 1967 ... AC 1968 ... AD
1969 ... 69 1970 ... 70 1971 ... 71 1972 ... 72
1973 ... 27 1974 ... 26 1975 ... 25 1976 ... 24 1977 ... 23 1978 ... 22 1979 ... 21 1980 ... 20 1981 ... 19 1982 ... 18 1983 ... 17 1984 ... 16 1985 ... 15 1986 ... 14 1987 ... 13 1988 ... 12 1989 ... 11
(Beginning with 1973, if you subtract the prefix number from 100, the remainder equals the last two digits of the year.)
Note - The Model 336 was introduced in 1948.
Note - .35 Remington chambering was introduced in 1949.
Note - Sandblasted receivers appeared in 1953. (No serrations on top.)
Note - Starting on April 14, 1955, the last two digits of the serial number were etched on the bottom of the bolt on the Model 336.
Note - "Micro-Groove" rifling replaced the Ballard-type rifling in the centerfire lever actions in 1956.

You're welcome, Wofford, and welcome to the Campfire, by the way. Just noticed those were your first posts. Hope you'll stick around to chew the fat.
