The future depends on us! Does that mean you have no opinion on a replacement trigger for the 9317?--Thanks--Bill

billg,
Sorry I missed your post.
I'd ask Savage.

Hi JB,
Hope you are out shooting stuff! Got a nice little muley with my .54cal Knight LK93 a few weeks ago.
I've adjusted the trigger to where I like it, but when I give the stock a good rap on the floor I can get the trigger safety to release the bolt. If I set it for more sear contact it doesn't seem to matter, just makes for a lot of creep.
I emailed Knight, haven't heard anything yet. Thought I'd see if you guys had any suggestions.

John, whats your thoughts on Jewell triggers for hunting rigs? I have used them quit a bit in nasty conditions on several rifles without a single problem. However, one does hear internet stories about them.

I haven't used one all that much, but didn't have any difficulties--though didn't hunt in any real tough conditions either.

John, Have you attempted to reduce over travel in a factory Ruger mkII trigger?

Yes, and it's very easy. But if you haven't fooled with triggers much, you should probably leave it to a gunsmith.

Great article and thread.
I'm going to use the opportunity to put it out there that the BLR trigger is one of the more egregious sins to afflict an otherwise generally accurate rifle platform... and it's hard to find anyone qualified, willing, and crazy enough to tear into one... but Neil Jones of Neil Jones Custom Products can make a BLR trigger damned decent.
I sold the Jewell I had on my Sendero and will be looking for an aftermarket trigger that is crisp and clean set to 1.5-2.5 lbs. I'd say the trigger on my Kimber is a good example of what I'm looking for, in terms of feel, or the feel of a worked-over M700 trigger group (not just springs, surfaces too)... I've heard Timney make a good "hunting" M700 trigger. Any reason(s) to avoid a Timney? Are they crisp and clean?
The CENTER will hold.

I have a bunch of Timneys in my rifles, in everything from my AR-15 to 700's and Mausers. They all work great, and the adjustable models can be adjusted to whatever range they're designed for.
As to BLR's, I can only comment on the single one I've owned, a .30-06. I purchased it used, so have no idea if somebody had worked it over, but it had a very shootable big game trigger of about 4 pounds that was pretty darn crisp as well. But I've also shot others that were terrible.
The easiest lever-action trigger to fix is the one on pre-mil Savage 99's.

J.B., What does "pre-mil" mean in regards to a Savage 99?

J.B, two questions, it seems .........
Overtravel,
do you like a lot of it , purportedly to not disturb the shot or,
very little overtravel, for some reason I'm told it is a virtue.
Regards Michael

I have a Rem model 700 BDL in 222. I've used this rifle for coyote hunting for many years but never did like the trigger pull. It is just too heavy for my likes. Today I took it to a nearby sporting goods store and had the trigger pull checked. It is 7 lbs. The store will ship out the rifle to a gunsmith to have the trigger pull adjusted for me but need to know what I want it lowered to. That's what I would like suggestions on. What is a "good" trigger pull for this rifle for this purpose? Thank you for any help.

lumberjack,
Personally I don't like a trigger pull any heavier than 3 pounds on a varmint rifle, and have many with 2-pound pulls--and a couple with 2-ounce triggers.
You might get it adjusted to 3 pounds and see how you like it before going lighter.

Jeff_O - thanks for the tip on someone who will work on a BLR trigger! I've had mine for many years and it's always been my go-to gun during deer season even though the trigger is so creepy I flinch three times before it goes off! I've never been able to find anyone who'll even touch it. One gunsmith said; "want a good trigger? Get a bolt gun!"
John - I've got a post-mil 99 that has a pretty good trigger. Nice and crisp. A good shooter. It may replace the BLR if I can get a scope I like on it. My eyes are getting too old for the peep site it has now.

Here is the article for those who didn't get the email: Triggers Neither of these links yield the newsletter on Triggers. The Newsletters link only has one September 2014 article on Small Rodent Rifles. Old thread, I know, but curious if these newsletter articles are permanently lost or is it a matter of updating the links?

John, Have you had any experience with the Trigger Tech trigger for the model 700 ? I have Timney's on most everything, but this sounds interesting.
