In reading Ringman's post concerning his new wildcat he says something about both thrust affecting velocity.

"For the astute there is something called bolt thrust. I am convinced the .257 SLR will duplicate the velocity of the .257 Wea with less powder because of less bolt trust. Ignorant prejudice is a fun thing."

Lots of things I don't know but what am I missing here?

Is this for real or is it Ringman's assessment?

The Mayans had it right. If youre going to predict the future, its best to aim far beyond your life expectancy, lest you wind up red-faced in a bunker overstocked with Spam and ammo.

It's Ringman's assessment.

I'm excited to learn more about this too. Could it be akin to Lee24's jet propulsion effect.......?

Ah yes, Lee24 - the master expert on all things great and small!

Unless someone can reverse or change the laws of physics, less bolt thrust will add exactly 0 fps to velocity. Any excess headspace, less bolt thrust, no lug setback, etc. doesn't do anything unless it is so bad that the case ruptures and pressure is reduced. Then velocity will be lower.

Case head diameter does effect bolt thrust. As the case head gets bigger, the bolt thrust increases (assuming all else remains the same).

Bolt thrust has z-e-r-o to do with velocity.

Dang!! I knew I wasn't one of the "astute" so thought ol' Ringy was really on to something here.

The quantity of baked beans you ate last night effects the velocity also. Maybe even at the range........... whistle

Even for us "non astute" people?

I'm gonna ask my wife what she thinks of "bolt thrust".

She will probably respond with an astute remark about my lack of barrel length.

Maybe we missed where ringman's build is on a straight pull Ross.... Maybe less bolt thrust means the bullet will go faster than the bolt

That just might be a winner!
