In the market for a 22 mag rifle, (on a waiting list for a PMR30 22 mag pistol)so I want a long gun with ammo to match. Mostly interesrted in a semi auto, but interested to hear what your suggestions are and why. No real reason for wanting this..just plinking, targets, yard rats, and maybe prairie dogs, so I want good accuracy to about 100 yards or so. I'll probably put a scope on due to my old eyes not liking open sights anymore. Been looking at 10/22 magnums, Remington 597's, Magnum Research ..stuff like that..likes /dislikes..stuff to steer clear of? Thanks..

The 10/22M is an expensive proposition. I know little of the 597, Magnum Research isn't exactly light on the pocketbook. Personally think if you want a quick follow-up shot capability, a used 94/22M could be the way to go .... not cheap though.

I had the same itch a few years ago. I researched a bunch and for what people wanted for their 10/22 mags, I purchased the Magnum Research. I made a good decision, IMO. While they are not perfect, it is a nice gun. Plenty accurate, super light, and has been super reliable. Two things I would change about it would be the trigger (heavy) and the stock. The Hogue is pretty flimsy but is usable as a hunting handle. These are not meant to be bench guns anyway. The boy really likes it!!! X-VERMINATOR

Take a good look at one of these: .22WM Marlin 982VS [img:center] [/img] I'm most likely ordering one. If it's anything like my 917VS it will be an absolute tack driver. http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/22WinMagnum/982VS.asp

I had a hankering for a 22mag. Satisfied it with a new style Browning T-Bolt. It has a Helix magazine which it very functional. I like that it is flush with the stock. It is very accurate with CCI ammo. Not as fast shooting as a semi-auto but works well. I have the sporter weight model. The trigger is a bit heavy yet crisp. Over all a pretty nice gun.

I wanted them all. Greedy I guess. Got a Sako Quad. All bases covered, and very accurate. It was however expensive. Compared to four different rifles it was not to bad.

Welcome to the Fire.
And, I had a 597 magnum, wish I still had it. It was very accurate and reliable. Trigger was a bit tough but I never tried to have it worked on either.

I have a 10/22 Mag and love it. Bought it when they first came out and have never had any problems with it but I have heard they've had some issues with the bolt. Mine has shot many rounds with nary a hiccup and it's very accurate too.

Go over to rimfirecentral.com, lots of info on what you are looking for. I ended up with a Sako Quad and have no regrets whatsoever.

the only .22 mag i've ever shot was a marlin 783. you can't beat the quality of the old marlins. flip-up sights stay protected when not in use and the one we had never needed re-sighting in in all my seventeen years. i think it has a twelve round tube mag.

When I wanted a .22 mag I got one of the 10/22 Magnums, they were still available then. I did the same thing to it that I did to its little brother in .22 LR, a Green Mountain 20 fluted stainless barrel, with a Kidd trigger in a Hogue stock with a 2x7 Weaver Rimfire scope. Works well. Nearly as accurate as the .22 LR version.
Now I would like to find a 9422 in .22 mag to go with my 9422 in .22 LR.

For a currently-made semi-auto .22Mag, I'm attracted to the stainless/synthetic Black Lightning rifle marketed by Mitchell's Mausers. .
It ain't no fun, when the rabbit's got the gun

You'd be interested in CZ's new 512. Or, check out www.excelarms.com; they have a dandy semi-auto WMR rifle (and a pistol, too.)

Volquartsen or Kidd built on their own version of the 10-22. I personally prefer the Volquartsen as a walk-around gun with superb accuracy. I think (and I've been wrong in the past) the Kidd's are directed more toward those who shoot targets rather than critter's. I believe if one or both of these can't make you happy you doomed.

I have a handgun and rifle in 22MAG. Had a lot fun with both over the years. The rifle is a Marlin 882. Great rifle. Only problem with 22MAG is the cost of ammo. But everyone knows that.
