Has anyone ever hacked into your checking account(via debit card)?
Crooks got into our's last week and made 4 'purchases'. My wife checked our account online Friday morning and saw the transactions, called the bank right away and they had already had the account 'hot carded'(shut down). A couple more 'purchases' were attempted while they canceled her card.
My question is, did the hack occur online or from somewhere in town?
And how in the hell do they do it?
Thanks for any advice.

Thanks for any advice. That tells me it was a breach that went beyond just you. Guessing there were vulnerabilities in the network or Internet security. Easy enough to confirm and will get back to you.

Mexico. First clean out all email to make sure nothing of use is in there...anywhere. Then change passwords. Most hacks occur when a site is compromised and a person uses the same password on their email account.

BYC, there have been rumors in town about the local grocery store having 'issues'. We've had the same internet security for several years and this is a first. Not sure what to think but obviously want to avoid any future bullchit.
Scott, my wife called and asked, "WTF did you buy from some funky sounding Mexican place?!"

People steal account numbers all the time, and then sell them in bundles on the internet. The buyer usually will test the stolen accounts with $1 purchases somewhere on line. If they go through, then they light 'em up.
Happened to us a couple of years ago.. Person hit us for a buck, and then tried to buy a full blown Mac for around four grand. Our bank's fraud protection software shut 'em right down.
FWIW, My debit card got shut down in mexico all the time when I was living there. I would draw a couple hundred bucks at an ATM every week or so, and sometimes they would shut it right down seeing the transaction coming from Mexico. Then i had the pleasure of talking to someone in India about my American bank account being used in Mexico. That was always a fun 45 minutes..
I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

I lot of time this breach occurs when some waiter takes your card when you pay for dinner and write down the info off your card and the three digit security number off the back.
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

Several years ago our account was hacked. Several repeat charges to 800 numbers. We reported it to the bank. They sent us to make a report to the police station. Went back to the bank with the report number and they immediately restored all out funds. Three weeks later the police told us it was the owned of the gas station we used. Station closed and we never saw him again. We understand he got a bunch of people and was hooked big time on porn.
Never had a problem since then.

Just be glad they made purchases and you weren't hit for cash "ATM" withdrawals. Purchases on your VISA debit card are protected against fraud but "ATM" cash withdrawals are not covered and you'll end up eating the loss. Also, the bad guys only need a PIN if they're trying to withdrawal cash from an actual ATM that requires a PIN.
Sounds crazy that the withdrawals wouldn't be covered and was news to me until it happened to a fellow member here on 24HCF.....

What is it, gas station, whore house? I've been in a barbershop/whorehouse but never a gas station/whorehouse, sounds like a good business model, fill her up and go.

Don't have any Debit cards as they are tied direct to your Bank Account. The bank may say its safe and maybe thats true but your account can be shut down for as long as it takes to straighten things out.
The end of democracy, and the defeat of the American Revolution will occur when government falls into the hands of lending institutions and moneyed incorporations.
