I was looking at the barrel on a Savage 24 and it said "Do not fire shotgun barrel with scope attached" What gives?

Or the scope would detach from the recoil of the shotgun barrel.

Most of the scope put on those 24s were 3/4" tube rimfire scopes without much eye relief. I can remember getting a scope bite from one as a 16 year old while sighting it in to hunt deer with slugs from the 20 gauge barrel.

I remedied this by mounting a nice peep receiver sight on it. It was made by Williams and it clamped on the scope mounting grooves so it required no extra holes to be drilled. I killed a ton of squirrels with that rig.

Well I guess I'll not be putting a scope on one if I get it. I've been looking around for the right one. I messed up about 15 years ago and passed on one for about $125.00 because I thought it was a srange gun. Dumb. .222 or .30-30 over 20 would make a great little gun for coyotes.

Indeed. Saw one of the ugly and heavy 24 plastic stock 22/20 gauge for $295 at funshow this morning. Man, was it heavy and ugly.

How are the wood stocked models. Any lighter? The gun I looked at years ago had plastic stocks. I can't remember if it was heavy or not.

I would think the plastic stocks would be lighter than wood, but I don't know. It seems the metal parts are just way lower quality steel than the old ones so they used more of it. That thing this morning felt really, really bad, plus it had some sort of cross safety. I set it back down as fast as I could so I didn't study it. Not for me that's for sure.

My solution for combination guns that need scopes is a low-power scope with long eye-relief (not an LER or "Scout scope", just one with very generous eye-relief). Most of the 2.5X, 2.75X, and 3X fixed scopes work well, but my favorite is the Weaver V3. With some practice, you can leave it on at 1X and use the shotgun barrel, then flip to 3X for the rifle barrel. My friend in NYS uses his older 24 20/.22WRM with the 20 guage barrel with 3" shells for turkeys and slugs for deer and has had no problems with it hitting him in the eye or coming loose. I know that he does use Loctite under the mounts.

I suspect this WOULDN'T work with a 12 guage with its much higher recoil. But does the current M24 with the 12 guage barrel use the same thin "scope groove" mounts as the older 20 ga. and .410 ones? Can't imagine why they would do that....

My brother had a 24 when we were kids, .22 over 20 gauge. The .22 barrel was grooved for a tip off mount. Guess I wouldn't trust it to keep a scope on for very many shotgun shots. My grandmother had an early .22/.410 with either the buttstock or forend made of tenite.

I'm sure that it's because you could get poked in the eye with the scope. Make sure that the scope sits far forward and always pay attention. A few times I have pulled the trigger expecting the .22 barrel to fire but had the shotgun barrel fire (my fault) It surprises the heck out of you!

I bet that has happened a lot. That would be a pretty surefire way to get scoped. I started out with the wrong barrel in my 0/U a few times.
