Wow Gene, never noticed that before. All the pics in Browers book go the same way as Brians and I went and checked my 1917 380 and the indian is pointed in the opposite direction. I can't find anything in Baileys book that talks about this quirk either.

Mines an earlier model serial 189XXB.

Check page 121 of Brower's book, I just looked through it again. Bailey himself told me about this when I was talking with him at a show - I did not find this out myself.

Whoops, didn't see that pic.

Mines the opposite, head dress pointed towards the trigger.

The "Savage 1917 Model" marking appears only on the second (final) version of the .32 m1917 frame, s/n approx 245000-259472, made 1921-1926, although a few of these ended up being built with .380 slides/barrels and s/n'ed as .380s (there is a high degree of parts interchangability between the .32 and .380).

Hard to tell how many of the earlier .32 m1917 frames ended up with .380 components, since the markings on those frames are exactly the same.

For those without the Carr/Stern/Brower books, in the standard classification of Savage pistols the difference between the first and second versions of the .32 m1917 is the presence of this marking. The difference between the first and second versions of the .380 m1917 is which version of the barrel is used.

Again, for those without the Carr/Stern/Brewer books:

The earlier 1917 grips have the Indian facing forward on the R grip and rearward on the L grip. The later 1917 grips have the Indian facing forward on both grips. The change in grips does not parallel the change from first to second version (ie, 1921) -- second version m1917s have the earlier grips. Neither version is rare. The earlier version is somewhat less common, but seems to be no more valuable.

There are also other m1917 grip variations, including presence or lack of metal escutcheon in the grips for the screws, different metals for the escutcheon (brass or steel), and at least one .32 m1917 (second version) was made with no screw hole at all (in either grips or frame), just the circle on the grips where the hole should be drilled.

The duller finish is correct.

Brian-
I have the twin to your Norman-Ford scope. Let me know if you don't want it and I will take it off your hands. It looks really good in a set of 7/8 stith mounts!

well it turns out that I did not end up traveling last night as previously planned and had a chance to dig around this morning, and the rings that I was thinking of were actual 3/4", sorry. Wish I could be of more help but I would have sworn that I had a set of 7/8" rings...
