I scored a 336 Saddle ring carbine today for $50.00! The rifle is in about 95% condition. Bore is clean and shiny. The trigger is gold and has a brass saddle ring. The stock is a straight pistol grip and the walnut has a nice french red look to it. The bbl is 20 inches long and the serial number is AB16xxx. The model stamped on the barrel says 336 R.C.
I always wanted to get one of these, but never thought I would get one for a song! The guy I got it from inherited it and said that he had no use for a gun in his house and offered it to me for the price above.
Any info on this rifle would be appreciated. I was also wondering how old it is and the ballpark value. I was guessing about $300 or so. Like I said, It is a beauty and hopefully, I will get a chance to shoot a deer with it next season!
Thanks guys!

Congratulations on a great deal! I would think it would be worth over $300.00. Marlins were great rifles until Big Green took over.

RC stands for regular carbine.I'm not sure what you mean by straight pistol grip but your gun was made with a pistol grip stock not the straight stock. If your rifle has a straight stock it means someone changed it somewhere in its past.I wold think the value is somewhere around $300 or $400 depending on condition. You stole it.

I did a little more investigating of the 1966 336rc and it seams I was wrong about the straight vs pistol grip stock.I found out that they did make a saddle ring 336rc with the straight stock. If your gun has a straight stock it is a lot more rare than the pistol grip.Sorry about the misinformation.

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, it is a straight stock and the back of the lever loop is round and not square. I was told that most straight stocks had a square ended lever. Thanks for checking this out. I still cant find anything on this particular rifle. What was your source?(if you don;t mind me asking. Could this have been a special run for someone? Going to shoot it this saturday!

I think that the best source of information about Marlin guns on the internet is marlinowners.com

What is the point of the saddle ring? I know what it is, but every time I have looked at it all I see is something to either tie some leather strap on or a part that can rattle and make extra noise. Why are some people so enamored with them?

It was originorally put there for a lanyard to be hooked to it, so that it wouldn't fall out of the scabbard(i think).

The saddle ring was installed on carbines as a place to tie the rifle to the cowboy by way of a rawhide string, in case he was thrown or fell from his horse he would all ways have his rifle handy. Now they are put there to look cool.

FWIW, Marlin has never made a so-called "Saddle Ring Carbine" like winchester did (SRC).
What you have is something special/desireable among Marlin-knowledgeable folk - a Model 336T Texan.
While the 336T Texan's were made from 1954-83, the only ones issued with brass saddle rings were made from 1965-71, and usually can bring about $450 in that condition.

I thought the Texan barrels were marked with a "T" and not "RC".

I thought the Texan barrels were marked with a "T" and not "RC". You thought wrong. In that vintage all 336's are marked RC, including short barrel Marauders.

The straight stock Marlins had the round levers back in the 60's. they changed to square maybe around 1970 or later. I have a couple of them, love em. Wallacem in Ga
