I have an old model 760 rem pump in 35 rem. My question is, can it be rechambered to 358 Win? If so, how big of a project would that be? I want to either rechamber or trade for something else. Any suggestions are welcome.......fishster

I think that you need a new bolt, since the 35 Remington has a small diameter than the 358. I have heard that these are not successful with heavier bullets because of the slow rate of twist, but I do not know that this is true from personal experience.

Sell it and buy a 35 whelen when they come out in the spring.

Load it with 40 gr 0f 3031, a 200 gr bullet, and you will be close to a 358
(2400 fps).
Good luck!

I know several guys who have rechambered 760s to 358 Win and 358 Whelen. It is not a job for the average kitchen-craft home 'smith however.

The 1:16 twist works. Bert's 358 Win has a 1:16 twist and he has used nothing but the 250 Speer spitzer at a bit over 2200 for years. It stabilzes just fine and puts down our big moose and bear with aplomb.

I had this very thing done to a 760 in 35Rem. It worked great!

IIRC....It is a better conversion than to 35W as the ejector is in the proper location for the 358 but has to be moved back for the longer 35W. Just re-chamber and use a ..308 mag and go.

BTW........The 35Rem can be loaded for the 760 to higher pressures than the standard Marlin lever loads, but certainly not to equal the 358W.

I sold mine while on a moose hunting trip at "Yukoner's" to a guide friend of his. I eventually bought a 7600 in 35W to replace it.

I agree with Hawkins on this one. Just load the .35 Rem a bit hotter than you would for a levergun and you aren't that far off a .358. Why go to the cost of a conversion for minimal velocity increases? Ward
