I've got a sticking safety on my eg.It's by the lever.I've tried oiling it but doesn't seem to be helping.Once it's on it's very difficult to get off.By difficult I mean I have to use pliers.Any ideas?

When it comes to choosing friends....I'm at an age where I'd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

Take it apart and oil it down, if it still sticks take it to a gunsmith and get them to polish it up. les
Back in the heartland, Thank God!

You don't need a drawing. Just remove the buttstock and it's intuitively obvious how the safety works.
To remove the butt stock, remove the butt plate and use a very large standard screwdriver to remove the stock bolt.

I have said this before, but to appreciate the genius of Mr. Savage, you should dismantle a 99 to see just how wonderful it is. If you think the outside is a work of art, just look at the inside! Dave O

I have heard it said that the average fellow should never attempt to dismantle a Savage 99 as it can be a bear putting it back together again. Is this right or wrong?

Savage is easier than Marlin is easier than Winchester is easier than Remington and all these are a piece of cake compared to any post WWII gun with coil springs, roll pins, brads, and tack welds.

slideaction, Without the proper tools, a place to work and some preparation and a bit of homework, the "average fellow" may have trouble changing a blown tire and getting the spare tire & jack out on a modern auto..:) The model 99 rifle requires decent screwdrivers fitted for working on firearms, some knowlege of where to begin ( removal of buttplate and then rear stock thru bolt) and some common sense .. After that, short of tearing it down to the last component, the M99 is pretty straightforward.. This Gun Digest book below worked well for me a few years ago when I did disassembly-assembly on a friend's old M99..Good text and pictures covering the basic M99 Savage as well as alot of other popular centrfire rifles.jim http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=468061

Slideaction, I too didn't take my 99 apart until I asked. Too used to modern guns where taking a gun down can be dangerous, let alone difficult.
Don't fret tho..
Took one screw out of the stock (had to purchase a new screwdriver to reach it tho), one screw out of the forearm and that was all the farther I had to take it. Stock comes off while nothing else will fall off, and you have access to most of the internals. Was able to clean some built up crud that was making the action jerky, and also do a quick cleaning of all reachable parts.
It slipped back together like a charm. Even got rid of a bit of slip on the butt stock by tightening up the screw properly. Very happy now..
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com
