For those interested, I saw this on Winchester's site the other day:

I was wishing for a 257 Roberts.

Would be great if they could get a fast twist barrel on the .223 version.

Nice ! I'm about ready to buy a single shot rifle other than a Ruger for the 1st time. Can't decide between a Browning or a Winchester. This will make it easier.

There goes my plan to have one in 6.5x55 made someday out of a .243.

It would be nicer if the wood matched the picture.

They finally took note of how much .260's were bringing on the used market.

I nearly bought a 6.5x55 in #1A yesterday, that had great wood. Tough decision, now.

The Low Wall is sweet handling. Pity about the lawyer proof trigger. You listening, Browning?

There's one thing that I don't understand about these low walls. The weight is given as 7.5 pounds. Why are they that heavy. I believe the Browning low walls are supposed to weigh about 6 pounds or a bit more without a scope, or so people say. Even with a round barrel, I don't see how it could add a pound and a half to the Winchesters. Both are supposed to have 24" barrels. Can anyone shed some light on this inconsistiency?

The Swede actually makes more sense IMO. Lots more commercial rounds available aithough you will have to shop catalogues to find most of them. More brass too. And it promises to be around a lot longer. Virtually zero difference on game.

The 24" barrel could be bobbed to save a little weight. My 1A custom has a 21" non-ltwt barrel and weighs in just over 7 1/4lbs scoped. Shhots fine.

Some Winchestrer stocks however are pretty ratty looking. At that MSRP, I wopuld expect very nice wood.

RJ- I cannot imagine a low wall weighing that much, sometimes you get typos, unless they are using a heavier bbl.........

No need to bob a 24" sporter bbl as light as they are and as short as the OAL of the rifle...

At 1399 msrp - they 'shot themselves' in the foot IMHO but alas I have my nice custom 260s....

As to a fast twist 223, nice for mice to deer...but a Swede goes from Mice to Moose wink

Twice as nice! Ha!

No doubt, the wood needs to go back to the grade of the original Brownings IMHO......satin fine vs. gloss, but the wood needs to be better than the last run I have seen.

It says Octagon barrel on the page, so maye 7lbs 8 oz is just a typo. Hopefully they didn't just shorten High wall octagon barrels crazy

What "lawyer proof trigger?" These are the same design arrangement as the previous Browning iterations.

Aren't they both made in the same Miroku factory in Japan?

and don't the profits from either go to the same corporation in Belgium?

The Brownings have really nice wood and are priced accordingly. The "Winchesters" use some kind of crap half a step above fiberboard.

I will likely end up getting one somewhere in the next couple of years. I see they have gone to a "bridge" type scope mount. I got one of the Highwall 300H&H's here last month, the wood is not nearly comparable to the Browning, although, the pic on the website seems to show the Browning style finish on the wood.
Wood is easy enough to replace with something decent if necc though.

FWIW, my Browning low wall in .260 weighed 7 lb 10 oz scoped with a 2.5x8 power VariXIII with factory bases and rings. There is zero comparison between it and the new Winchester offered low walls. The metal fit for the Winchester is awful, and the wood is exactly what BT said and I think calling it fiberboard might be generous. Checkering is beyond awful.

I recently bought one (thanks to BT) and its going to be customized rather significantly. I truly only bought it for the action and to use the existing stock as a pattern stock.

vaturkey. You said you "recently bought one". Was it one of the new Winchester Low Walls? If so, what caliber and how much does it weigh without a scope? Thanks, RJ

It was one of the new Low Walls and I sold it to him. It is currently chambered for .22-250 and it weighed 6-1/4 pounds on my postal scale.

The mount looks interesting is Miroku making those? Rings look a whole lot like Tally or Warne's. I wonder if they will ever be offered as a retrofit item?
