How many still stick to the old way of hunting elk with iron sights? Every time I put a scope on my guns I take them right off within a week. I love the looks, the balance, and the light weight of a rifle with no scope.
I said elk, but I really mean all game.
Anybody feel the same way, or am I the only old fart living in the past?

My eyes are so bad the DOW gave me a special licence to use a scope during muzzleloader season which is iron sights only. They also gave me a license to use a scoped crossbow during archery season.
I can't use either one. I'll just stick to iron sights, and get closer.
My Remington 700 BDL is pretty light stripped down to iron sights. 7.2 lbs. I can't wait to hunt it for elk.

I prefer peep sights on some rifles but as I got older I find a 2.5X scopes almost mandatory in dim light for the eyes to function correctly

I do about 50% of the time.

In all honesty i prefer my 336 with open sites. If it was my primary rifle i'd look into fiber optic sites.

Only if I have to! No scopes in WA with muzzleloaders. Missed a couple of shots and got lucky anyway.

Right now I don't have a choice. Had to sell my two main hunting rifles, a M70 Winchester .270 and a 6.5 Swede, to finance a couple of other things. I've never had a .22 with a scope and now I'm down to only one centrefire rifle with a peep sight.

I've got no use for scopes when hunting. They are strictly target shooting gadgets as far as I'm concerned. Though occasionally, I'll take one squirrel hunting because my rifle is set up for a target match and I'm too lazy to take it off.
Serious hunting is all done with irons and real powder.

In this open country, 300 yd shots are fairly common. I'm not about to try that with open sights.

Time to time I still hunt with sights, but I do like my scopes too. Haven't had the muzzle loader out in a while. It did fine on mule deer when I did hunt with it though. Took a doe with this .44 revolver, does that count? I need to get the receiver sight and front sight back on my old .30-06, just for the heck of it. The rifle always shot well with them.
