I was looking through the S&W catalogue and my eyes keep seeming to wander back to the m617 in 22lr. Specifically the one with the 10 shot cylindar and the 6" barrel. My question is how accurate are they, and is it possible to mount a scope on them.

My son has the 6-inch ten-shooter. He can easily put a cylinder full inside an inch at 25 yards with the iron sights. It's easy to mount a scope, if you want. Just remove the rear sight. No drilling required. ........ Here's a mount.

muzzleloaderman;
Irons with a 6" revolver is probably plenty good; esp. with a .22LR.
Try it with the irons first, I suspect you'll like that just fine.
Nice choice of sidearm, BTW.

Im going to try it with irons first. and will most likely keep it that way. Just wondering if a scope was even an option. The only other .22 pistol I have shot was a ruger bisley. and I want a little more meat on the grip than what that style of revolver has.

Those Bisley grips ain't small. You must have some real meat hooks! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

the grip on the bisley is long enough but I want more meat on it, a thicker grip.

I have a 617 with the 6 shot cylinder that is mounted with a red dot sight. I shoots fine, but it is a heavy revolver and I think that it would be a load if carried far in a belt holster.
If you want a gun to shoot and carry, among the best kept secret in 22 and 22 Mag handguns are the Rossi 518/22 LR and 515/22 Mag stainless revolvers. You can buy them for around $250 and, if you want a larger grip, can substitute the grip from the Rossi 720.

Another option for easier carry is the Taurus model 94 9-shot revolver. You can get that gun in 4, 5, or 6 inch barrel. Mine is the 5". I love the balance. And it shoots pretty darned accurate with the right loads.
Still - I'd like to have a 617 for when I don't have to carry it far.
Lunatic fringe....we all know you're out there.

I have a Model 617 6" barrel stainless full lug, 6 shot cylinder. It is extremely accurate and fun to shoot. I have not mounted a scope on it. The adjustable sights work fine.
