Hey guys, my Dad showed up today with a S&W 63, 4", no dash.
It's been very lightly used, almost new.
It belongs to a relative and the owner doesn't need it
anymore and told Dad he could buy it, but didn't know what
to ask for it.
What would you assume a reasonable price would be?
We looked at the internet and auction sites and found them to be a bit on the ridiculous side...
Is there a site to look up S&W dates of manufacture?

I'm not sure on the price as they seem to be rare. My local dealer had one that looks like it's seen some rough use and he is asking $425 for it!

The ones around here and on GunBroker that are a no- early gun start at $475 for a nice one up to $600 with box and paperwork. That isn't the "asking price"...those are the selling prices. Here is a probably -1 that will be worth less than a no-. It started at a penny...add probably $50.00 to the final price and you are looking at what a comparable no- would bring. Prices may seem ridiculous but these are not available at your local gun store any more... A new MIM pats hole in the side of the frame Inetr-Lock gun wholesales for $563.00. So a LNIB original 63 is going to bring more than that because of the quality... http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=272024383 No- guns were made from 1977-1981. 1982 started the -1 which deleted the pinned barrel feature. Mine is a 63, no dash, and I paid $350 for it some 10 years ago.

I bought my S&W model 63 for $300 + shipping, 20 years ago!
Saw one at a big gun show a few weeks ago and they were asking $550-650 for it.
Great light weight lil' gun, have shot many Ptarmigan, Grouse and Rabbits with it!!
But one if you can, you won't regret it. And if you do let me know, I'll help you out! :-)

Sorry, what I meant was that the "old" P & R M63 with all forged parts was no longer being made. IIRC I paid around $190 for this one new in '77, now wearing Herrett grips from a gun show bin. I'll bore you with a story. Around that time Ruger came out with the MK-II semi-auto 22 so I bought a 5 1/2" bull barreled one. I went off to college in 1980, Central Coast of California, and soon realized that tree squirrels (and turkey's) were somewhat abundant in the nearby Los Padres National Forest. I could not hit [bleep] with the "target" Ruger (trigger's sucked on them back then) but rolled 'em with my little Smith. The Ruger was sold soon after and I whacked many a squirrel with my M63.

They really are great guns. I am a fan of the older version and find mine extremely useful. It would certainly be one of the very last guns to go if Lord forbid something bad happened and I had to liquidate guns for cash. I have the original box and tool kit for mine and from what I understand those alone bring a good price from collectors. I wouldn't sell mine right now for any of the prices mentioned so far, I think that much of it.

The problem with gunbroker is that by clicking one button when you list an item it will re-list for up to 50 times for no additional cost. The 2nd thing wrong with them is everyone sees what an item they have to list is priced at and think that's what it is worth. Don't know how many times I've looked at an overpriced gun and the owner/dealer has said 'that's what they are going for on gunbroker'.
If you will log in at gunbroker you can review the completed auctions in the advanced search and look for the guns that actually sold and get an idea what they are worth. Even so that is with a national audience, here in the backwoods (no major cities/industry) selling prices are actually lower yet (YMMV).
All that said, I paid $425 for a 63-3 about 5 months ago (no box or screw driver).

I think it's safe to say if it were on here (classifieds), even without a box at $450-$525 it wouldn't last long.

Great feed back guys, thanks! Mine is a -3 that I bought for $313 back in the late 80's IIRC. I'll just send this thread to Dad and let him make a decision. Maybe I should help him out a bit and run a brick or two down range and take the "new" off of it for him... don't read that, Dad

If it's in really nice shape, boxed w/ tools, P&R, anything under $600 is pretty good.
