WELL i just came back from southern ill. had three good days of turkey hunting. i have never had a bad day of turkey hunting. this was public land and there were other hunters there. anyway i called up a first gobbler for a friend of mine. he did his part with a marlin 3" 12ga loaded with 2oz. of #7 1/2 shot. one shot and he did a good job holding himself together as it took about 40-50 minutes to get the bird into the 30 yd. range. after he took that one we never heard another turkey gobble and all i could find were hens. just my luck. i'm the one who didn't get a bird. well it's 3 birds for 4 tags so far and i guess i won't carp about that.
<br> i have 3 more tags to call for but all those are in wisconsin in the month of may. so i am going to have to wait a month before i can go again. luck to you all!

ROTR: yes, he was excited. it was a great turkey hunt with lots of gobbling and waiting. just the right mixture to get the blood pressure up! and now he thinks i am the greatest turkey caller around. it's not true. anybody could have called this bird. but knowing how and where to set up the ambush is something you learn only by making some mistakes first. i knew the minute the bird came to our side of the hill that we were probably going to have a good chance at him. the turkey first gobbled on the back side of a distant ridge. the question was whether to go closer and call or try to call him from further and not risk bumping into it. i decided to call the bird from further and not risk the bumping. and when he came around to our side of the hill he was several hundred yards away but as he had come that far already i figured he would then come the rest.
<br> as i have said, my friend thinks i'm the greatest turkey caller there is. and i know that will only last until he calls his own! then he will be the greatest. and that will make me feel good. luck!
