Far as I know no one has done it. But if Col Charlie were yet around, you can bet he would.

Off the top of my shiny pointy head.... I'd verture that it wouldn't have much on the 8x68S. Just my $.02

Off the top of my head, I can think of one thing the 8mmUM would have over a 8x68S, brass availability. Other than that, I think an 8mmUM would be a great cartridge. I know nothing about the 8x68S. How fast will an 8x68S drive, say, a 220 gr. slug out of a 24" bbl.? Just for conversation.

Well, the RUM case has considerably more capacity than the 8X68S, so it should do better.

Might wanna take a look at the 8MM Rem. Mag. Already commercially available, and a damn big case. Haven't compared it to an ultra mag case, but at a glance I doubt there's a ton of difference in capacity. Also given that there's load data as well as ammo, I think I'd look there first... Of course, YMMV

RZ49,

The limiting factor here is the length of the barrel. All of these cartridges need at least a 26" barrel in order to use a fair selection of powders. The 24" barrels should be left for lessor capacity cartridges or those better balanced for a shorter barrel. The 8mm Rem. Ultra Mag. could use 28" of barrel or more to be worth the effort, but that sort of defeats the purpose of most hunting rifles.

My 8 x 68S is in a 650mm barrel (25.6") and is terrific for elk, moose or deer. It's fairly light and easy to carry for hunting in higher elevations. The cartridge is designed to fit in the standard length Mauser whereas the other two have to have a .375 H&H magnum length action.

I realize that this won't get you the biggest and best award in camp but it is the most usable in a pedestrian sort of way. It also makes for a very classy and classic hunting rifle. But if the bigger is really better then by all means, go for it and enjoy yourself!

8 x 68S case capacity = 86 gr. H2O

220 gr. bullet/ 26" barrel = 2750 fps./ 3775 ft.lbs.

8mm Rem. Mag. = 99 gr. H2O

220 gr. bullet/26" barrel = 2950 fps./ 4175 ft.lbs.

8mm Rem. Ultra Mag. - 117 gr. H2O

220 gr. bullet/26" barrel = 3000fps./ 4400 ft.lbs.

Regards.

I really doubt that you could do better with an Ultra 8.

But, I you just want it. . . . .

I have a 28in Krieger barreled 700 8mm rem collecting dust that'll scratch that itch and probably for half the price of building the ultra mag. The funds would go to a good cause, having a rifle built and cleaning out some excess.
