Ned and I have been fighting over the fly-fishing rod that SteelHead sent us....like literally playing tug-a-war with it ( prolly scaring off the fishies ). So, we are trying to sell a couple of our guitars (we have more guitars than bathroom towels or forks, lol) so we can afford another rod.

Does this sound like a good deal....for $150.00...it is used, of course?

Rod: Saga DS2 9ft 7wt 2 piece
Reel: Orvis Battenkill
Line: Scientific Anglers Mastery 7wt WF

The guy is willing to take payments....he is getting rid of it because he has arthritis and can't fish with a one handed rod that size. Seems like a really nice guy....and is willing to let us fish it first.

Any thoughts.....thanks guys !

A 9ft. 7wt Sage for $150, plus reel and line? Yeah, it's a deal. Take it.

HG, I'll bet you could catch Steelhead without a rod, reel, or line. Now, releasing him might be a significant problem...

Oh, you meant the fish...

What sort of guitars are you thinking of selling? I might be interested.

HG,
Youre taking up fly fishing and decide Steelhead (the fish vice the Coastie) will be your quarry? Sell some of your S & M gear instead of guitars cause ya gotta be a masochist

A seven weight is OK for trout in your area (I lived on Whidbey for 7 years) but I suspect you'll enjoy a six more. If youre really set on Steelhead head north to the Nooksack around Deming where it used to be common to catch a half dozen summer runs in a day without freezing/drowning.

Failing that flee the clouds and head across to Yakima and fish the Yakima and Naches for trout. Go ahead and charter a day drift on the Yakima. Youll learn more in a day of drifting with a guide than in two years of trying alone.

Personally, I think it's an OK deal if everything is in A+ condition but it's far from a screaming bargain. Since Sage discontinued the Discovery series it's been the loss leader/value rod of choice for lots of shops. Most anywhere online was discounting at least 40% right off the top which put 790s at $170 brand new full warranty. A shop near my home was selling 890-4s for $145 and Discovery series combos with rod/reel/line/backing for from $175 to $235 depending on configuration...

That was with a Orvis reel also not just the sage rod. With both its a good deal.

Get it HoundGirl. I have several Battenkill reels and they hold up pretty well. The DS2 Sage is a good rod, and 7 weight is one rod I will not be without (that is why I have 3 of them).

Yeah....seems like a good deal, to me...but I wanted to check with all of you fly fishing masters first !

Thanks, again, everyone!

Yep, I understand that - I have over 30 rods and literally a standup toolchest full of reels, including over a dozen Orvis of different flavors. What I wrote above is that depending on configuration new closeout stock DS2s combined with a Battenkill run in lots of shops from around $175 to $235 brand spankin' new depending on configuration. Heck, the new Sage Launch series that replaced the Discovery in 690-2 with a Battenkill 5/6 is easily had out the door for $230ish...

So again, assuming the reel is a disc drag I think the deal presented is "OK" and worth dickering on, but not a write-home-about-it bargain...If the reel is a machined barstock like a IV or V, then your point is well taken and it's a bit more attractive. I'm not being argumentative at all, just giving the lady something to think on and maybe some dickering fodder...
