Ok, this may sound dumb, but the folded piece of black plastic inside the sheath for my new Buck knife is just to help the sheath hold its shape during shipping, right? Are we supposed to remove it once we start using the sheath? Thanks.

It's in there to keep the blade from slicing up or the tip from gouging the sheath.

I got a Buck Vanguard a number of years ago. It did not come with the plastic that you speak of but it has something in there now. I'm sure the tip would have worked its way through the bottom of the sheath if I hadn't added the nylon liners that I did.
