The grackles told me it was time to go turkey hunting. Yesterday I set up next to a wheat field and called one in. He was not the biggest bird I ever killed but a nice one just the same.

I went out at 1:00 pm started calling at 1:30 and shot the bird at 2:13. It had a 9 1/2 inch beard. He came in totally silent. Never once heard a gobble. Morning hunting is not very productive right now as the birds are roosting with hens and fly down with them. Mid day is the best calling right now though it is not always as exciting. I like to hunt turkey and it's fun to be able to know the best time and place to score on any given day. But I really love morning hunting the best. It's a great time to be in the woods and be apart of natures changing of the gaurd as the night time critters and the day time critters change shifts.

I just thought i would check in with how the hunting is here right now. I have a guided fishing trip this weekend down in Del Rio. Will most likely try for another turkey after the fishing trip.

CONGRATULATIONS! it's a great thing to be successful so quickly but kind of a downer because of having to wait for something so long and just seems to end so fast. so savor each one. luck!

pds - I can't imagine how you got that one. If he didn't gobble, you didn't know he was there but you were quiet and still enough that you didn't bust him. Good show.

Oh, I knew there were turkeys in that area. During the middle of the day most gobblers come to the call silent. They have been whiped by the dominant bird so many times by now that they try to sneek up to a lone hen with out attracting any attention to themselves. Don't ask how I learned that, it had to do with spooking a lot of birds.

I have killed my share of birds during the morning and that is the most fun. But all my largest birds were taken during the early afternoon. When the hens are still breeding it is eaiser to call a gobbler during the afternoon after the hens have left him to go sit their nests.

Did you keep the armadillo? They can be pretty good vittles.

prairie dog shooter - Fascinating. Your story reminds me of the phrase "dumb like a fox". This also comfirms my suspicion that there is a body of useful knowledge and techniques developed that is a little higher echelon than the typical stuff a new hunter starts with. I'm not going to lose interest in turkey hunting anytime soon.

I finally taged out on turkeys for the season. Took the other three during early afternoon hunts. Nothing big, there are a lot of young birds this year. Had one bird get right up behind me and strum. Made my heart stop! Here in rattle snake country that always gets my attention. I did not kill that bird, I know he must have seen me jump! Hope every one else has a good season.
