If I didn't reload, I would rather have a 270 Win. over a 30-06. Just me.
Another good choice!

I'd give a new Kimber Montana a chance.
Pick any of the suitable chamberings and have at it!

Another vote for the .30-06, in the Winchester, Remington or Ruger of your choice. My favorite rifle is a custom Featherweight in .30-06. I hate the thought, but if I had to I could loose every other rifle in the safe and still hunt anything in North America.

Timber...358 Win (CDNN still had Ruger M77's a couple of weeks ago) or 35 Whelen. After last season's elk hunt in CO, I realized I was in timber 90%+ of the time, and bought a 358 Win as a backup (or primary) with my 300 Win Mag.

Grab some hand loading equipment and buy a Whelen.
Or grab a 30-06 and enjoy the fine factory offerings.

Remington SPS 300WSM, B&C 2462, Warne Rings/mouns or Talley, and 3x9 Leupold VXII. Hunt the wheels off it!

I think you should look at a Remington 7600 carbine , plenty accurate, light and quick follow up shots in the lodge Pole timber.

30-06... If you want light spring for a NULA...
Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.
The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.

If I cound find a Sako Vixen in .222 mag I would be hard pressed not to buy it for deer hunting. Some kind of light weight scope that tops out aobut 18X to 20X would be just about right.

Although a 35 Whelen would be cool as well. Hellz yes. FNH needs to open a custom shop there. I want a stainless Supergrade in 35 Whelen or 358 Norma.

For not a lot of money, the Tikka T3 is hard to beat, accurate lite weight and a great trigger and smooth bolt. Some folks don't like the plastic, but have never had any issues. The 30-06 would be my choice in your situation, even thought I have one in 338 Federal. If the ranges are within 250 yards then it would be fine with a bigger bullet/hole than the 30-06. Off the shelf more choices and easier to find ammo in 30-06.

Depending if you are bothered by, or prefer removable magazines. Tikka T3 lite has removable magazines, very light and accurate rifles, need after market Limbsaver recoil pads.
Rem M700 Stainless SPS accurate light rifle, comes with Remington's equivalent of LimbSaver Pad, but I like aftermarket Timney triggers on M700s. Also like 300 WSM but 30-06 is OK. Happy Hunting

Pre-'64 m70 FW .30-06 = 7-1/4 lbs as pictured. Gotta go w/ Bob, on this.

Another plus on the 30-06. I was thinking about saying yes to the 300 wizzum too but since you're not a handloader the 30-06 is a better option. Factory ammo is more abundant and it is a lot cheaper than the wizzum....
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Looking to add an elk rifle to my line up. 300WSM will hunt almost everything in North America. 150s, 165s, 168s, 180s, and others....it can do it all.

Ted,
Factory ammo is easily available for any rifle being chambered for today..all you need is a credit/debit card and a phone number to the many distributers such as Midway, Graf & Son, etc...
THEREFORE, if I were you, I would first find the rifle that fit me the best. The chambering would then be secondary. It might be one of your listed options of consideration, or it might be something else. I'd not get too hung up on popular ammo availability being that most everything is but a 'click' away these days...
