I'm sure there is a name for it...??????????????????????
Maybe some of you horse experts can help out here?.......Tonya, do you know?....Atkisom?....anybody?????????
DS

I am far from being an expert.
Paints are interesting so are pintos. If you ever want to get into a hot discussion try to tell an old cowboy what you think is the difference. Supposedly a paint has some quarterhorse in its bloodline, and the pinto does not. The old guys think a pinto is like the pinto bean brown and white only....and on it goes. Tonto in the lone ranger had a black and white paint.
I have read in one of the horse mags of a third color variation called tovero. The horse supposedly has both of the markings of the overo and tobiano.
We had a wonderful tri color arab paint mare. She was ridden too early, around two years old, and it messed up her front feet. She was the smartest sweetest horse my wife had ever been around. Gail is the "expert in our family. She has been around horses her whole life close to 50 years. We sold Candy because we really could not trail ride her in the style we wanted. (My wife owned one of the buckskins that Matt Dillon rode in Gunsmoke now that was a HORSE! And another story)

I ride a grade pinto that has a tad of mustang in him. He is 14.2 hands and is "single footed" too. He is mostly white so the wife says he is lethal white. He is a bit ugly with his hammerhead, but beauty is as beauty does...
Good hoss ridin......Ross

well I am thinking the same idea as gutpile, overo, but you might beable to figure it out, because you can compare him to the colour descriptions:
Tobiano:- head markings like those of a
solid horse
- All four legs usually white
- spots are oval or round
- tail is often two colours
Overo:- white on the overo will usually not cross the back
- one or more legs will usually be dark
-they have bold white face markings
-pattern is usually irregular with scattered markings
- tail is usually one colour
Tovero: characteristics of overo and tobiano
Well hopefully this will help talk to you later
Tonya
Make it idiot proof, and some one will make a better idiot

Tonya-Good to have ya have your own name. We went thru that here in our house, as my wife didnt have her own handle for a few months. I finally talked her into gettijng her own and she posts all the time now. Ya seem to know yer horses and look forward to some good conversation with ya on them. My only problem is we have WAY to many horses around here!!! I have a new colt that is gonna be a dun I think. He is out of a palamino and a Palamino but he does have a stripe down his back. We will see as he grows older and gets his permanent hair. bcat
------------------
If you aint the lead dog the scenery never changes [img]http://www.hunttalk.com/icon/bcatrunningcat.gif.com/boykin][/img]
Boykin's Hunting Homepage

Bcat,
thanks for the welcome, it must be nice to have all those horses though, I can't wait until I can have horses again. I would actually like to buy back my quarterhorse mare.
maybe your colt will be buckskin in colouration, unless there is no black on his legs. My quarterhorse mare's mom was a buckskin, and very nice looking, I like the contrast.
So how many horses do you have now?
You'll have to post some more pictures, I like seeing pictures of peoples horses, do you have any of your colt( how old is he)?
Well nice talkin'
Tonya

Tonya-The colt is three weeks old or so right now. He dont have any black on his legs. We have ten horses of our own and then the kids have several horses of their own. I shouldnt say we have too many horses can a person ever have TOO MANY?HEHEHE We both love horses and at least we dont have to buy hay for them, probably couldnt aford to have that many if we had to buy hay. bcat
Oh I forgot to tell ya we got the mare bred back to a paint stud. That aught to be intrsting what comes out of a Paint and a Palamino, any bets Tonya?
------------------
If you aint the lead dog the scenery never changes [img]http://www.hunttalk.com/icon/bcatrunningcat.gif.com/boykin][/img]
Boykin's Hunting Homepage
[This message has been edited by bcat (edited April 23, 2001).]

bcat,
No I don't think you can ever have too many horses
Yep it sounds like your colt will be a dun, thats surprising since both parents are palomino, that'll make it tricky to predict what her new foal will be. I have seen a few palomino paints and appys, and they can be quite neat looking too.
What colour was the stud? I have fun with predicting foal colours. There is an older man that I know each time his mare has a foal he asks me what I think it will be, so far I have been right every time.
Your mare doesn't seem to follow any colour pattern, so that'll be tricky and interesting to see
Talk to you later

Sorry to take so long to get back with you good people!.....been overwhelmingly busy!(dang that was a long word! )
Ross.....my wife wants a "Matt Dillion" horse as well....either a Buckskin, or a very dark Palomino.
Thanks Gut....it came to me just as I longed off!
Tonya....the Descriptions are great!......you get it from "All You Ever Wanted To Know About Paints, Volume I"!
You seem to have a whole lot of horse sense!
Bear Creek......haven't had time to snap his pic!....but will this weekend, so you can see if an ol' city boy learned anything from your "horse-buying 101 Crash course" you gave me!
He's big if he's anything!.....and I've rode him every single day, whether I've had time or not......wany him to know why he's taking up space out back, is all!
DS

Tonya-The mare is bred to a paint (brown and white) stud!!! Lets see if we can predict the color. THe stud isnt a HOMOZIEGUS stud so it could be any color I reckon! ANy bets?? bcat
------------------
If you aint the lead dog the scenery never changes [img]http://www.hunttalk.com/icon/bcatrunningcat.gif.com/boykin][/img]
Boykin's Hunting Homepage

Hi there
Its easier when you can see the horses, but I think it might a buckskin paint or possibly a chesnut.
Let me know when its born, but the colour can still change after that too, only time will tell
Tonya
