Could never narrow it down to just one, too many good movies made in the last 100+ years. "Favorite movies" are those that no matter how many times I've seen them, when they are showing on TV I have to watch them. In no particular order at all:

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
AI (Artificial Intelligence)
The Shawshank Redemption
A Clockwork Orange (almost anything by Stanley Kubrick)
Aliens II - the best of the bunch
Gladiator
Almost any Barbara Stanwyck movie from the 30's and 40's
The Graduate
The Wild Bunch
Kill Bill vol. I and II
Forbidden Planet
Young Frankenstein
Band of Brothers (technically a mini-series, but still a favorite)

and that's just off the top of my head. Let me give this some more thought... wink

Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery.

"The Return Of Red River Johnny." No one will ever top that one. grin

Second in line would have to be "Gone With The Wind."

"The Return of Red River Johnny."

Leanwolf, if I remember you correctly, I must ask if you were involved with that one.

Nahh, John, I'n not that old. Actually, I saw that flick many years ago, one summer Saturday afternoon at a theatre in the small rural town in which I grew up. I was home from my Freshman year in college and thought I'd drop in the theater for a good Saturday afternoon shoot-'em-up double feature.

It was undoubtedly the all time worst movie I had ever seen... and I had watched a whole bunch of movies growing up. After it was over, I went and got my best friend, same age, who also, as I, loved movies, good, bad, or mediocre. I told him, "You have got to see this western movie! You'll never see another one like it!"

We went back to the theater so he could see it too. Afterward he said, "I oughta kill you for completely wasting 90 precious minutes of my life."

Fifty years later he and I still laugh about it. It had not one actor in it I'd ever seen before, even on the Saturday afternoon "B" and "C" movies.

Years afterward in Los Angeles, I was the Story Editor on a western teevee show at MGM. One day in the producer's office, a conversation came up about really bad westerns. I told them about The Return Of Red River Johnny. No one had heard of it but curiosity was aroused in everyone, including the star who was in the office at that time. (Filming was over for the day.) So the producer had the Production Manager try to find a copy so we could screen it for laughs.

He couldn't find a copy even in the Hollywood film storage vaults which house thousands and thousands of old flicks, clear back to many of the early silent movies. Probably a very small independent film company shooting on a shoestring and it very quickly fell into film oblivion... along with the company.

So... when someone asks, "What's your favorite flick?" I say The Return Of Red River Johnny, hoping against hope that some one of us geezers might have seen it when young and we could share some yuks about unbelievably bad flicks.

Hope all is well over there in your neck of the woods, and also with your writing.

L.W.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I had a young man ask me just the other day what were my favorite movies of the past 15 years. I really drew a blank. A few in my list probably fall into that category, but honestly, I think what Hollywood is producing lately is entirely forgettable. So if we can bend a little and consider television I would have to say "Lonesome Dove." My wife and I watch primarily British series we get through Netflix. In the past year we have enjoyed "Foyle's War," all seven seasons of "MI-5," and recently watched "Little Dorritt."
