Mine was a 700 KS in .35 Whelen. That platform was just light enough to make shooting 250's fairly unpleasant. And that was before it scoped me...

What about you guys? It seems like some fellas were recently bemoaning 77's chambered in .338WM... Let's hear about it.

My best friend, who played Nose Guard for the University of Missouri, built a lightweight fiberglass stocked 416 Wby... that thing was brutal! He could sit at the bench and put 3 shots into a sub-moa group. However, after 10 rounds he'd be black and blue in the shoulder, but you wouldn't know it by the groups. He's essentially recoil-proof... not me. That thing SUCKED.

Another time we were shooting and another friend borrowed his 45-70 Marlin with 2-7 Leupold on top... he was warned the scope might bite him... advice he ignored. First shot, he get's up with a "damn" and blood running out of his thoroughly broken nose! He "adjusted" it and didn't say much more laugh

Like anyone that's hunted much, I've been "scoped" (aka, Wby eyebrow)... but that can happen with even fairly mild rounds like the 30-06.

I've had light 338's and the like, and when I was in my 30's they didn't bother me. Coming up on 51, I prefer stuff that kicks like the 270 and 308 Win.

Color me wimppy...

probably a real light .308 with a stock that was WAY to short for me.

That little SOB beat my brains out.

Ruger #3, hot smokeless hand-loads, 45-70. Crescent butt plate.
That was a snotty little dude.
Cut your shoulder, and the lever whacked your right hand.
Utterly un-shootable.

Same friend had that rifle... pretty tough recoil, but a hot-loaded lightweight 416 Wby made it almost comfortable by comparison... seriously.

Colt Anaconda, 4" barrel, 45 Colt, 335 grain cast bullets and a bunch of H110. That exceeded my recoil tolerance and I've been paying for it ever since.

45-70 With a plastic buttplate and 12 guage 3.5" magnum pump. Ouch I would much rather shoot a 375 H&H anytime (with a pad).

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Back in 1972 or 73 after I first started reloading, I accidently loaded up too much IMR 4350 in my 300 Win. In my manual, I looked at the IMR 4831 max charge weight instead. Went about 4 grains over. Don`t remember the bullet weight.

Ouch! Got nailed with about a 1/4 circled bloody scope gash above the left eye and damaged the firing pin as well. My smith at the time got a good laugh.

Yeh, I had one of these shocked Synthetic stocks. It would bust you. One shot and a headache all day. I also had a M70 pf in 30-06 that had some kind of problem. Shooting 180 light magnums it did lasting physical damage to the shooter. I've had probably ten '06s, including one that runs less than 6#, and never one that came close to the M70 for brutality.
