Sir:

As I'm sure you are aware, loading data is pretty slim for the .30 Newton. The only loading manual that I have that has data printed is the Speer #4 Wildcat manual.

You don't say what bullet you wish to use, but I'm assuming likely the 180 gr.

It lists a starting load:

IMR-4350 of 65 grs. for a muzzle velocity of 2685 f.p.s.
and a Max load:

IMR-4350 of 71 grs for a muzzle vel. of 2958 f.p.s.

and also with H-4831:

Start @ 69.0 gr.s for a vel. of 2650 f.p.s.

and Max @ 75 grs. for a vel. of 3005 f.p.s.

I'd be VERY leary of those top loads. Speer is known for not having any pressure testing equipment until after Manual #9.

Best to use a chronograph and stop when reasonable velocity is attained. If you are using an original Newton rifle, remember that the metal is near 100 yrs old. Metallurgy had made some advances since then.

Also one could likely use data for the .30/.338, but again I'd stop well short of top loads.

I, myself, have an original .35 Newton, and I have NO intention of trying to make a magnum out of it. 100 f.p.s. more than a .35 Whelen will suit me just fine! smile

Load data.com has 19 loads for the 30 Newton from the pages of Rifle #130.

I'd cut and paste them but I don,t know how with the stupid IPad I'm using.

I'll do it when I can get on a real computer.

They also show five loads from COW.

Here are the five from COTW.

.30 Newton (Cartridges of the World)

Warning! Notes: General Comments - The 30 Newton is a rimless, magnum-type cartridge similar to the 30-06, but larger in diameter. Neither ammunition nor cases are readily available since it has been obsolete for more than 50 years. A limited quantity of new cases was manufactured right after World War II by Richard Speer. The 30 Newton is powerful enough for any North American big game. The 300 H&H Magnum and 300 Weatherby Magnum outperform it, although its performance can be improved by handloading with modern powders. (Cartridges of the World 10th Edition)

If you have Quickload software the .30 Newton is listed. It shows a 51 K PSI. limit so you can be as conservative as you care. The steel from that era is not as suspect to me as the wood. The Newton stocks were built very light for the potential recoil developed. At 62.5 K psi. the data looks like a .300 Win Mag.

My uncle has an original newton, what a shapely rifle wearing a finely tailored piece of wood! Gun is 99% but ive always fancied working up a few loads for it. Very helpful info. We've got roughly 200rds of brass, and 60 original loaded rounds which are speer and are in a very cool charcoal cover box with a silver lion on it.

No, my uncle is a very wealthy man, and a collector of fine arms, He has to my knowledge one of the largest winchester collections in the midwest totalling 500+ rifles, 73s 76s 86's multiple henrys, sharps, etc. He's always been fascinated with newtons and i know he looked long and hard to come by those boxes of ammo, he says thier rare as hens teeth to find them in mint boxes and all, and i think the brass he wants me to reload for him. If something comes up and he decides to sell any of it, i will certainly let you know.
