.17 Remington!
1.) Still has great accuracy when loaded to Fireball speeds 2.) Hammers dogs and fox dead right there, but does little to no pelt damage. 3.) Gets plenty of hang time with PD's and gophers. 4.) Components abound and the dies aren't Class Z or whatever so you can still make your truck payment. 5.) Shoots like a lazer out to the 300 and that encompasses almost all of my shooting. 6.) It's my pick.

Travis I agree with Travis on all of his reasons, plus no recoil. You can actually see the impact even in a sporter weight rifle. The 17 Rem. doesn't give up much to the bigger 17's either.

17 Remington cheap to shoot, flatter than a Swift , easy on hides and the shoulder and kills like lighting.
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

I have had a 17 Rem rifle for some time but since getting a 17 Fireball have not used it very much.

All round here in N. IN is "pretty short range" to most of you guys. 300 yards is RARE and Id probably have to back up to get that shot often. Average? 150..maybe.
Just made my choice myself lately for a varminter/predater/fun at the range round.
17 Ackley Hornet. (cheaper to load in retirement)
God Bless

From a handloading perspective, I'd probably wildcat a 17/222...
I handload a 17 Fireball now for an elderly friend who owns one in an Encore set up... which I hate..not my cup of tea...
but I like the round...
brass prices for it got stupid tho...

I like the fireball, just not the brass prices! It seems to be very efficient and can come within 200fps of the 17 Rem with a little over half the powder. T.S.

17 Rem - tighter twist for 30 gn bullets, which is what I use in mine.

I've only worked with 2 17 Rem barrels and 1 17 FartBall; The wildcat 17-222Mag with quality 204 cases has been far less finicky, faster and would run a 30 great if twisted right and 17 Rem dies seem to work for this chamber.
The Rem factory stuff ails for decent brass, for sure.
