Was encouraged from the site to get a Callahan letter. It said that rifle was manufatured in 1899 and consigned to the Looree Arms Co. There is no information for this company and there is nothing on the internet. I was wondering if any of you might be familiar with the name. I acquired the rifle in Maine and believe it was there for most of it's time.

Also, if I acquired one of the rear peep sites you guys always mention, would it mount into the holes on the receiver perfectly or would it have to go to a gunsmith for installation.

Would you mind sharing the date it was accepted from factory and when it shipped? Helps our data to be more complete for the next guy who asks.

And never heard of a Looree, and googling through my sources doesn't find a thing. Happens sometimes, but not normal. Wonder if somebody mis-spelled the name in the ledger? No address given, I presume.

The rifle was accepted to the warehouse on Sept 13,1899. Callahan said no address was listed for the Looree Arms Co.

All the tang sights and tang mounted receiver sights will fit the tang holes. Some of the receiver sights can be problematic in that while they fit the holes they don't quite fit the stock wood. In other words, some of the receiver sights may need the stock wood relieved to fit. If I tried to mount one and found that it needed the wood relieved I'd send it down the road and try another example. I've never run into that problem but others have.

Thanks Skidrow, I was hoping that those holes were there to mount a rear sight.

Make sure that you've got the correct screws to mount the sight with. They take a round tapered head screw. Lightfoot has tons of them.

Thanks for the heads up on the screws. Do most sights not come with the correct screws? Could you recommend a couple of sights that I should be looking for? Obviously, new is not an option is it?

All savage 1895/1899/99's from 1895 to 1959 have standard tang holes for peep sights. So you're good to go as long as the serial number is under 1,000,000.

Most of the sights you'll be looking for are long out of production and are only available used or if you're lucky new old stock. If you are fortunate enough, as I was last fall in one instance, to find your sight new in the box it will come with the proper screws. Mostly you find the sights at gun shows, internet auction sites and old well established gun shops that may have a few things forgotten about growing cobwebs. Fellow members of this forum are also a source if someone has something that he's willing to part with. AFAIK the only sights still in production that fit the tang holes are a Williams receiver sight and a bastardized (modernized) Lyman tang sight. Neither would meet my standards. Hope this helps.

I am sure there were a lot of mom & pop hardware stores and even gas stations that sold guns that went out of bussiness during the depression that no one remembers. imo

Of course there were, but what happened to their stock?

I think Williams dropped their sight that attaches to the tang sight holes, but still make the one that screws to the scope mounting rear holes. Last I checked Marbles had one that would screw to the rear holes, but it is not the same as the old ones.
