Just have been able to get back onto this forum.

The 9.3mm bullet has intrigued me for a few months now, and I'm thinking of getting an action (Mauser or Remington) to build a 9.3 on. My thought though, is this:

The '06 case I could use...but then I could buy a 9.3x62 or 9.3 Hawk and not have to build. But I like the satisfaction I get when building things...

A 338 Win mag might do...if memory serves, someone called that the 9.3 USA...

the .348 case has also been used..and called the 9.3 North American...

Would a .308 case, AI'd, be a good choice? What about the WSM or Rem short mag cases?

Any thoughts out here to help me with?

McPhereson talks about the 416/284 being 'spawned' from his 375/284. It's in Cartridges of the World. Might think about that. Just some FYI

Dang!

Why didn't I put that 284 case in that list of maybe's?

I just knew when I didn't, that'd likely be the first thought thrown out!

Well, thanks, pointer...the 284 would make a fine case to tinker with. There be lots of people here with 284 experience to help me with the particulars...

Any more thoughts?
A standard 9.3 x 62 is an excellent round. I have one on a Mauser action with Kreiger barrel. 250 Ballistic Tips at 2750 FPS and 286 Partitions at 2600 FPS. I talked to John Barsness a while back about making a 9.3 Ultra mag or a 9.3 on a WSM case. I always wanted one for myself using a 340 Wby case. I am not sure how a 9.3\284 would feed but it would make a fine dangerous game round. As you probably know , supplies are limited on bullets and the rest but there is plenty to do the job. Just thought of something else---an 8mm Rem mag necked up to 9.3 . Ought to be a good one. I have parts on the way to form\swage lead bullets in 9.3. This should be fun.

The little .416 TAS is first priority, but as soon as it looks like I can move back to Alaska I am going to build a rifle for what I have called the .360 Malamute. This cartridge is the simplest of wildcats since it is the .300 WSM necked to .366 with no other changes. the performance should mimic the 9.3x64, but in a short action. The .366 diameter bullets seem to wrap up so many good qualities for terminal performance that a short action version is needed.

Back some years ago, my first wildcat idea was a 9.3 based on a slightly shortened 284 case (2.015), with some other case demension changes I can't remember, that I wanted to call the 360 Pferris (after my oldest daughter, then a new born). I sent a drawing to Clymer's and got a quote of about $125 for a reamer. This wildcat would not be the next best thing, since plenty of factory and other wildcats are simular, even possibly better, but I wanted to do something different.
I've since decided to change the case to the 376 Steyr to update this wildcat idea and do it on a short action Ruger. This project is a ways off, though.
I hope you find a way to do one, and enjoy it to it's fullest. Should you put it off as I did, then it will only be a memory. Here's wishing you luck. ~~~Suluuq

Thanks to all replies.
Rusty, you're absolutely right concerning the why I wan to do something like this: I just want to do something different. I've no intention of allowing it to become just a memory, though. However, since I'm new at the game, I've still a few bridges to cross and a lot of things to learn before I'm actually going to pull this off.

I became attached to the 9.3 because I see it as much like the .338: underheralded (until recently), with better sectional density, ballistic coefficients, and penetration potential compare to bullet the same weights in the calibers just above and below it.

Plus, it's just plain not popular here, so it's not going to be common at elk camps, either! Just having a 9.3x62 will be uncommon enough.... [Linked Image]

Charlie, I thought of the 8 mag necked up also. The idea of 286 gr Partitions at around 3000 fps is an inviting thought..... [Linked Image]

I've always thought that the 300 Weatherby necked up to 9.3mm would be a killer. Then a 300 WSM necked up would be a great timber rifle to boot. Whatever you decide to do, please keep us posted,,,,,,BH
