A buddy sold me one today as he did not like it much on account of its gigantic muzzle flash, noise, and pretty stout recoil. Not being bothered by such things myself, I always liked the beast and jumped at the chance to own it.

Anyone else out there have one of these and if so what do you think of it?

Never heard of that round. What kind of handgun is it based upon? What kind of case, etc?

Probably not this simple, but what it boils down to is a .45 ACP necked down to .40 caliber. The handgun I now have is a G21 with a Lone Wolf 6" barrel and I have heard rumors of other manufactures making them. Regrettably just the rumors, no names.

It's something of a hot rod. Load data suggests 1700 fps is possible with a 135 grain bullet, 1600 with a 150, 1500 with a 180, and 1350 with a 200. I adore my .357 SIG and a larger version of this was a natural choice for me. I don't think the cartridge has been around for very long.

Think 45 ACP case, stretched to 1.00", necked to 40, small primer, 38K psi.

DoubleTap sells a 6" drop in barrel for Glock 21 conversion.

I seem to recall that you like fast pistol cartridges also. Tell me, did you ever try 90 grainers in the .357 SIG?

Not yet. That's still in the "one of these days" phase....grin.

But I've got a Glock 21 and 22, so a 6" bbl in 357Sig, or 40 Super, are both on my mind. I'll jump on one or the other. The 40 Super looks like a real powerhouse.

I don't see it as all that much differnt from a 10mm Auto, especially if one has a 10mm with a full support ramped barrel.

Buffalo Bore and others load 10mm ammo to those numbers or very nearly so.

It's pretty close to the same performance, especially if you put a 6" bbl in the 10mm.

Supposedly the small primer gives the web a bit more strength in the 40 Super.

I'd favor the 10mm for heavy cast loads though. Straight walled case exposes no lead to the cutting effect of gasses, assuming a gas check.

.40 Super? We already have that; the 10mm auto. A solution to a problem that didn't exist.

The 40 Super niche, is where folks may want a swap-barrel for thir 45 ACP (like me), to pick up some horsepower.

It's close to a 400 corbon, but the Super has a slightly longer case, and I think the corbon uses a large primer.

well that would go along with what i know about a 400 cor-bon (i have been watching for a barrel for a glock 30) you can reform 45acp cases. as for the cor-bon vs 10mm it is my understanding that they are ballisticly(spell??) twins but the cor-bon does so with quite a bit less pressure.

Some numbers from quickload database, case volume/max pressure,

10mm: 24.0gr/32K psi

400 Cor-bon: 25.46gr/29K psi

40 Super: 28.29gr/38K psi

...you guys better do some reading.... Page 83 of Marshall & Sanow's book STOPPING POWER has very good review of the round....

It is a .45 Winchester Magnum necked down to .40/10mm. Triton Factory loads are running:
135 Hornady 1800 fps

155 Quik-Shok 1500 fps

165 Sierra 1500 fps

200 Hornady 1300 fps

CorBon 135s....1450
165s....1300
180s....1150

10mm 135s....1450
175s....1285

The round from what I have read is long gone...even factory brass is very difficult to obtain...

I was looking at the round and went .400 CorBon instead as I had a 1968 GM and just had to add a barrel and spring...

As I recall, the late Dean Grennel was writing about the .45 Super back in the late '60s. Used a 1911 with strenghened springs. Triton Cartridge Corp. loaded ammo for it and the .40 Super during the late '90s.
The .45 Super box I have at hand list a 165gr QSHP at 1400fps from a four inch barrel.

If I remember correctly it was a gunsmith named Ace Hindman who come up with the idea of the Super and sold guns for it and ammunition also. At some point Triton began loading the ammunition. There was a disagreement between Hindmans son and Trition over who owned the name Super and the lawyers go involved. Triton went out of business.
'course this all started before there was a 10mm.

Starline makes a run of brass for this once or twice a year so availability is really not a problem. Apparently there are enough shooters that like to play with different things like myself to make manufacture viable. I kind of figured there was more to this cartridge than a necked down .45, thanks for the skinny.

It was either Ace or his son who converted my P-15 to .45 Super.
