If this is the wrong forum I appologize and may the mods move it.
I'm thinking of buying a long range type rifle in 338 lapua. I don't want to break the bank yet want a nice quality accurate rifle. I was looking at some accuracy international rifles on the net but my knowledge on this type of rifle is very slim. We only have room to shoot 600 yards so the 1000 yard stuff wont be an issue with the gun. What gun and cope set up do you folks reccomend in this caliber?
Thanks for any info.

The Sako would be my 1st choice but if it's a bank breaker...I've heard of some very happy Savage .338 Lapua owners. They have a new model out with an HS stock on it that retails around $1300.
I would question needing one for a 600yd rifle but sometimes "need" has little to do with it.

Savages will come in last place as far as looks, fit and finish are concerned. Most are extremely accurate rifles though and will shoot groups that rival rifles that cost 3-4 times as much.
That said, IF I could spare the coin I would go for the Sako TRG 42. It's just an all around nicer rifle but a lot more expensive.

The one Savage I saw at the range and talked to the owner about was somewhat dissappointing accuracy wise. My distributer mentioned that they haven't quite lived up to expectations. The ones I've heard specifics about were MOAish whereas some of the competition is 1/2 MOA or better......................dj

The one I've seen was shooting ragged one hole groups at 100 yds. Accuracy has never been one of Savages problems.

Terry Savages do have a reputation for accuracy. I was surprised when I heard that their 338 Lapua wasn't shooting up to expectations. I had thought about trying one out myself before I heard about the ones I mentioned................dj

Here is what American Rifleman had to say about it. They claim 1/2 MOA. I personally would opt for the HS Precision stocked model myself. American Rifleman review of Savage .338 Lapua Terry
