No, I think it was an early perch belly stock that had some 'customizing' done to it. I was thinking homemade too (something looks a little hinkey about the points on the wrist cheeks) until I read the sellers claim that the butt is numbered to the rest of the gun.

The butt plate has a Savage PN on it.

Looks like somebody liked that perch belly so much they just had to have it a little more pronounced. Looks OK except for that.

The pads look VERY wrong...!!!

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

have 4 P.B. from Same time frame there about.
And all 4 are Just a tad different when you look at them closely
Some are more pronounced as far as the P.B. and some of the pads are bit more pionted.

And Correct me if i'm wrong please, but did not savage Hand Finish, and Hand fit Each stock? So Just perhaps the Pads might be slightly pointer as this one is.??

Thanks to Lightfoot, I actually went back and read the ad. So, the buttplate is original. This leads me to think there was a chip out of the toe of the butt. Instead of replacing the wood, looks like the wood and plate were ground down to suit the owner. Makes it look pregnant to me.

stocks received a sanding at best... not like any that left the factory... sorry Steve B but there is no way that stock left the factory with the pads like that.

I could easily be convinced that a non-factory number and letter stamp set was put into play with that butt stock at one time.

Never seen a real Savage with such a badly shaped butt stock.

Hard to appreciate "never say never" in this case.

if there had been a pistole grip there ,somebody just took to much off ,but how many PG guns of that era had checkering ,that may also have been sanded off ,,,,,yes i have seen that done mad but theres bubbas everywhere ,to much sanding and now you need newly defined reciever cheeks.

FWIW...my first glance merely begged the question if this wasn't someone, like any of us, a favorite rifle, took one of those sometimes violent shots to the sharp, and straight grained heel of a walnut stock...

and buttplate or no, it pitched a chip...which someone just couldn't live with left alone?

or...I go with the 'really likes the perch belly look'..and wanted a fatter perch smile

I have to agree. How could a stock be so heavily sanded yet the wood to metal fit is, "perfect"? The pictures aren't great but I can't see where the wood is below or short of the metal confused
