Nice, fairly warm, sunny day, on Saturday. Decided to take my new H&R Sportster to the woods, for some ammo testing, in preparation for next squirrel season.
My buddy's shooting area is about 3/4 mile off the road, back in the woods, next to his pond. On the way in, I saw 6 fox squirrels, and one piney[red] squirrel, as well as 3 deer!
Get back, and set up the target, and promptly spook a grey squirrel out of thw wood pile, behind the range. Man did he give me a cussin!
Spent 2 hrs., shooting at 25 and 50 yds. Burnt up about 130 rds[which is a LOT, in a single shot rifle]. Came to some definate conclusions. Practically all the ammo was "minute of squirrel" ;), but the best was CCI LR, standard velocity. Very surprising, was that CCI stingers were awesome too, only shooting about 1" higher than the standard velocities.
Drew another conclusion. The gun shoots better than me, and when I took my bi focals off, I shot better groups!
On the way out, after 2 hrs., saw 3 more deer, and 2 more fox squirrels! What a great day! Got home, and mama and I had an awesome dinner. Fried bluegill fillets, french fries, and cole slaw, all washed down with ice tea.
Be 61 yo., next Saturday, and realized that today was one of the best times I've had, in a long time.
