I like to look at that fine transition Model 70....but I'd rather carry the Kimber all day. I think I need both.

The Model 70 is a much more substantial gun, and it's too bad Winchester didn't make a pre-64's Featherweights in .257 Roberts. (PAL was of course correct, my original post omitted the Featherweight qualifier ) The Kimber is slender and light and shoulders very comfortably. I only recently got the Kimber and have yet to shoot it. The bolt action on the Kimber operates significantly less smoothly than the action on the Winchester.

The bolt action on the Kimber operates significantly less smoothly than the action on the Winchester. Give it another 60 years or so. Betting you that it slicks up a bit.

I'd take the pre 64 over the kimber.....
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Just like the old pre 64's. Besides weight is way overrated....Grew up toting around a heavy azz hvy barreled sporterized m1917 so when guys talk about a 9 pound rifle being heavy I just laugh....

...transition Model 70...? Yes. 1949 Winchester Model 70 in .257 Roberts I use my purchase of that rifle as a benchmark by which I judge my actions. In comparison to buying that rifle, most everything else I have ever done buying firearms has been sane.

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Full length picture of the Model 70: Note, the wood is not spectacular: As I understand it, Winchester was simply making rifles.
