I never did. My dad tells of killing a spike in the River bottom when he was 16. That would have been in 1950.
I wanted to take a scalp, but the kill was not mine.

an old retired Fish and Game guy told me that in his 30 years of service over by Coos Bay OR, he has no idea how many elk poachings they had to investigate where Elk were killed by a 22 Win Mag... usually at night...
however, there were plenty of killings done with a 22 LR in the ear also...
said at times they would not arrest the offenders, because they knew them personally and the elk was used to feed a family, with the husband laid off from the mills, or logging operations, and not getting much on unemployment...

I haven't been on this website for long, but this thread easily takes the prize for the absolute dumbest thread I've seen in many years of spending time on hunting websites.
If anyone is dumb enough or careless enough in this day and age to shoot an elk with a 22LR, they should have their hunting privileges revoked for years. What a stupid concept.

No, but lots of squirrels and rabbits when I was 10 years old.
Money can't buy you happiness, but it can buy you a hunting license and that's pretty close.

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

i hear back in the 70's it used to be done by certain people in a state near the great lakes, heard it was when they were standing in the garden eating food people counted on. allegedly they never lost one and the meat was canned and sent to out-of-work family members (laid off from the auto industry). supposedly happened 2 or 3 times a year.
