Went out to sight in a Rem 721 in 270 today. Fired one round and it didn't extract from the chamber. The bolt just didn't grip the cartridge. The empty case wasn't stuck pushed out easy with a cleaning rod. Tried it with a loaded round same result. Factory loads. What do you think extractor or ejector or?

Model 721's have notoriously weak and failure prone extractors, a very small and fragile spring clip arraingement and even worse than model 700's which are also failure prone. Most likely a piece of shell casing brass is stuck in between the extractor spring clip and the bolt face but if that is not it, a new extractor is called for. If you are really atatched to this rifle and can spend the money for it have a SAKO type extractor installed. If you are not particularly atatched to this rifle, sell it and get a good rifle.

Just have a good 'smith install a 700 extractor with the rivet. I've modified two 722's this way, no problem thereafter.

It may be your brass. I had a similar problem with a 722 in .257 Bob. Turns out the Winchester +P brass was a good bit under SAAMI specs for the case head diameter. I consulted a GS about a Sako style extractor and he suggested putting an aluminum shim behind the extractor spring. Did so, and have been trouble free for 10+ years now.

Extractor probably has worn out. I have taken them out and re-shaped them to get them to work a bit better.
I have a sako style on a couple of them too though.

I had a 722 in 222 that did the same thing, extractor was worn out.

IMO (and that of several well known gunsmiths) the Sako extractor is dangerous. I'd go with the Remington extractor.

Not to hijack, but I'd be interested to see more regarding the dangers of the sako style extractor on the Remington. I know Remington takes pride in their 3 things of steel, but a lot of push feeds have the sako style of extractor.

I've read several stories of them blowing out. Some of the better gunsmiths won't do the conversion and it's unnecessary.

Thanks...
I sort of suspected that the case head being unsupported might be part of the reasoning.
I'd have to see the specifics though, I guess.
