Hi all. I was wondering if the Rem. Subsonics will properly cycle a 10/22. I'm looking for something to use for shooting grouse that will be as quiet as possible.

Probably not.

BTW - the Rem. Subsonics are not quiet; in fact, I'm not even sure if they are actually subsonic.

If you want to snipe grouse while big-game hunting, buy yourself one of the little Chipmunk single-shot bolt actions and load it with CCI CB .22 Shorts. They shoot well, are very, very quiet, and thump. Ask the four groundhogs that I got this year and more squirrels than I can remember over the past decade, at least.

Well, I have a couple boxes of shorts too and I was going to bring along the Savage 24 for them, along with some 20 gauge #9's. I just figured that I would try out the new stock on the 10/22 and try to get it bloody. If the sub's will work that is...

Try the subs, but I suspect that the shorts and the Savage 24 will make the trip and the Rem. Subs will stay home.

Curious to see the results of your tests, though.

i bought a 10-22 magazine that had been converted to handle shorts. i bought it at cabelas for $29.00 it won't cycle the action. but all you have to do is pull the bolt to cycle it. anyways i like it.

Yes, rem. subsonics will cycle in a 10/22. Still pretty loud though.

Are there any .22LR's that will be quiet and still cycle my 10/22? Actually it isn't a big deal if it cycles them or not as long as they are quiet. Cycling would be a nice bonus though...

Most any of the target rounds are going to be relatively quiet. I have shot everything from Rem Subsonic to Federal gold Medal and the Russian Junior out of my 10/22 with good results.

CB Longs probably won't cycle the 10/22 either but they'll work through the magazine better than the CB's or regular 22Short rounds. They're about as quiet as the CBShorts, hit a little harder, & are much more accurate in my old Win 141. If you don't mind cycling the action by hand, give 'em a try in your 10/22.

Sam,
I agree with Nobody. I tested low power .22 ammo looking for the quietest .22 round for squirrels and such. I had the best luck with CCI CB Longs. I do not have a .22 short magazine for my 10/22 and so tried the CB shorts in the regular magazine. As can be guessed they did not cycle the action, the other problem being they would not always make it all the way out of the action when it was cycled by hand which necessitated my tiping the action to the right to clear it. The CB Longs are just as quiet but will clear the action when hand cycled. The hand cycling was done slowly to avoid noise as much as possible for those possible doubles and triples on the early, young, dumb, yearlings that cook up so tender.

The two CB rounds are much quieter than any short I tried. In fact they are quieter than the sound my spring piston air rifle makes as it fires.

CB longs DITTO's.......................shot a pile of the CB short through my old garden and truck .22, a very well worn and hard run 39A..................................ran into problems.." Lead ring" in the long rifle chamber.......the Marlin fed / cycled them flawlessly, and held a Gazillion of 'em. Cleaned it up, and went to the CB long.........I actually think they're safer than my >177 pellets, in terms of ricochet, and over carry.Ditto's on the quiet aspect , as well.
They really do the job, in terms of killing power, at practical range discussed.

Sam,

The Aguila Sub-Sonic Sniper (SSS) .22 LR is exactly what you're looking for. It uses a 60-grain bullet to generate enough recoil energy to cycle the action. They are also very quiet. I've had great success in both auto pistols and rifes.

The cartridge is full LR length and quite accurate out to 25-yards or so. The big bullet also delivers a lot of thwack - give 'em a try.

The C.B. will work great but will shoot a great deal lower. need to sight in gun. I have got over 10 beaver with them from about 20 yards out and all they do is quiver and roll over. I have a 1000fps pellet rifle and it makes much more noise than the CB's

Well, I just got back from my hunting trip and the Rem Subsonics worked okay. The majority of the time they cycled the bolt fine, but occasionally they would fail to eject the empty as well as some fail to fires. They were quieter than the high velocities that I had along, but I don't think that I will buy them again. I'll try the CB longs and the Aguila SSS in the future. The Rem Sub-sonics did take off a few grouse heads though. I got one from fifty yards through the bush. Felt like a sniper on that one... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Sam,
Great shot on the 50yrd. grouse! The CB longs and the Aguila SSS will both drop a lot farther at 50yds. than the Rem Subsonics. That is one of the things that is so great about the .22s, there is such a great variety of loads to try.
