I'm looking at a couple of rifles both are Steyr Classic's one is a Mannlicher stock in 243, the other is a regular stock 270. Leaning toward the 243 just because.
Does anyone own one? They seem like a nice rifle are they?

The Steyrs are exquisite rifles, especially the older models. Back in the early 70's I started collecting and using the Mannlicher style. Started with 22-250, 6MM, 270, 7MM Rem Mag, and '06. However as a lifelong handloader, I quickly discovered that the rear locking action is not user friendly. The 270 and 7MM would suffer case separation on ~ the third use, and the 6MM and '06 on the 4th or 5th loading. The 22-250 cases seldom made it past the 2nd firing.
For the non reloader they are superb. The barrels are some of the finest quality I have run across in nearly 60 years of shooting, hunting, reloading. With a cartridge they like, the accuracy is often remarkable. They are also very easy on the eyes!
The only minus I can think of is that Manlicher style tends to run about a pound heavier than other rifles in the full stock design.

I've had a Model M Professional in 9.3x62 for near on 25 years.
Has never let me down, action is beautifully smooth, accuracy is sub MOA with everything I've put through it.
Can't speak for the newer models but you would be hard pressed to find a better factory rifle.

The current action being used is the same design as the scout it is called the SBS96 action.
When the rifle was proposed the had a weight limit of 3 kilos. The only way to make weight was by using an AL reciever.
Steyr took from the AR-15 barrel extension design and changed it to work with a 2 lug bolt head and a floating barrel extension. This allows for the funneling of ALL the gas down the barrel even is the case ruptures.
Thus allowing for the use of an AL reciever that is still safe with the calibers like 376 steyr and 308.
The classics and prohunter models use steel insead of AL and they are PROOF TESTED to 120,000 prior to being shipped.
I have seen a steyr rifle fired with a bullet hammered halfway down the barrel and it did not rupture.
The design doesnt even have gas vent holes.
Steyr also has Cold Hammer forged barrels. They are perfect, chrome lined and mirror finished.
And they are fast. I have owned dozens. My current "grab and go" rifle actually will shoot fedral gold medal match at 2550MV from a 20" BBL. My remington PSS shoots the same ammo at 2650 from a 26" BBL.
The short actions are not short, they are intermediate length. This allows you to load out the longest heavies bullets you can find and still fit the magazine.
Scotts outdoors in florida has the best prices on classics. they actuall have some scratcha nd dents that are hundreds below cost. look on gunsamerica for them.

I have a SBS Prohunter in 7-08 that seems to like the nut behind the trigger. The bolt lift during cocking is a little stiff (I believe it's a cam angle issue) but otherwise it performs flawlessly. The trigger needed no adjustment from the factory and breaks clean. And as Ringworm mentioned, the detachable magazine is a rifle loonies friend...allows the use of those long high BC bullets. They may not catch the eye of some in terms of aesthetics, but the darn things seem to shoot lights out.

My .280 Prohunter is my personal favorite. It shoots well below MOA with Hornady factory loads.
