We saw the aftermath of this accident last night, and wondered at the time what had happened. But I don't think it happened exactly the way the article describes: not unless the lady really hates ladders.

Ladder Causes Wreck on I-565

Last Update: 3/14 11:43 pm

HUNTSVILLE, AL - Huntsville Police are investigating a crash that tied up traffic on Interstate 565 Wednesday evening.

Investigators say just after 4:00PM, a woman lost control of her SUV after swerving to hit a ladder that was in the road.

The accident happened near the Sparkman Drive overpass.

The SUV hit a guardrail and flipped several times.

Two westbound lanes were blocked for nearly two hours because of the crash.

The 41 year old driver was taken to the hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.

Yep. Either something got by the proof readers, or the lady really has it in for ladders.

We seem to get a lot of ladders on the Interstate around here. In fact ladders, mattresses, and furniture items seem to make up the top 3 types of road debris. We passed a truck just the other day with a mattress and box spring in the back completely unsecured.

You do see a lot of Obama bumper stickers on SUVs around here.

That's not a typo.

That's just plain careless "thinking."

A typo is an accidental mislick, as when the type-setter types something like "hten" for then.

That reporter just wasn't paying attention to what she was saying, and neither the Editor, the type-setter, nor the proof-reader noticed her mistake.

Reminds me of the Pasco County (FL) drive to "wipe-out literacy by the year 2000."

And the best way to catch a typo or misspelled word is to read the text backwards 'cause your eyes/brain won't skip over it as easily.

This. Obviously, it should have read, "swerved to avoid hitting a laddder..." or somesuch.

Dr Howell, I was under the impression that NO publisher hired proofreaders, in the last several years. Am I mistaken?

When I worked for Wolfe, Dave had a TV set in the big room where the gals supposedly sat around proofing galleys so that they wouldn't miss any of their afternoon soap operas. You can imagine how much proofing got done, with all eyes so firmly glued to the tube, with pertinent commentary being so freely and fervently exchanged (not to mention occasional lumps in those throats and tears in those eyes).

So I had to proof the galleys after they got done "proofing" 'em.

Was busy proofing every night, late.

A Republican would have pulled off the road and moved the ladder out of the road.
