I think Winchester's short-lived bullet was the Silvertip Boat Tail that came out in the late 1980s. It was a terrible bullet on big game. My brother and I shot some antelope with the 190 grain bullets from a 300 magnum and all the bullets blew nasty shallow holes in the antelope.

As my primary .30 cal hunting rifle is a .308 Norma Mag, I guess I'll have to pull some .300 win bullets to try them, or wait to see if Win ever supplies them as components.

With nothing larger than whitetails and hogs down here, I seem to stuck in a time warp with bullets. For deer I still am loading Sierra Game King 140s in my 7x57 Ackley. I am wedded to Speer 170 FP 30-30s in my Marlin lever rifle for hogs. Most of my other rifles use Remington CoreLokt. Darn old things keep on killing cleanly. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" />

I would not set aside any money just yet to buy XP3 bullets for handloading. I'd bet you won't see them for well over a year.

The opening comments of Greg R are the most useful (mixed results)and yet overlooked facts pertaining to bullet performance.

All bullets vary in performance from time to time, user to user and game situation to situation.

Do not be discouraged with a bullet unless it is an obvious miss match such as using a 150gn BT in a 300 RUM to hunt sable in thick brush.

Bullets are great today. We are the most spolied ballistic brats in history and we still seek the best of the best and compare notes.

Still, it is a aweful lot of fun.

Howdy,
Got some questions for you. You state in your article that your avg group at a 100yds is 1.44" with 3 groups of 3 shots each.
Then at 200 yds you only give 1 # of 2.34" is that an avg of 3 groups or did you shoot just 1 group for 200yds? If you shot 3 groups, then what were the reults of each?
Then for 300 yards you state 5 of bullets measure 2.57", did you shot just 5 as 1 group or was there again 3 sets of 3? If you shoot 3 groups then where did the other 4 land?
Thanks & BTW I am soooo jealous of the elk, can I come with you next time? Blessings
Vince

Dear WWW:

At 200 yards I shot one group and at 300 yards I shot one group.

Seems like almost every bullet goes through at least a couple of changes before acceptable results ensue. Does anybody remember the bullet Winchester unveiled, then withdrew a few months later, that was the forerunner of the FailSafe? My memory is failing me.

I think you're referring to the "Black Talon" line. I believe the withdrew them for "politically correct" reseasons throughout their linr, because the antis were jumping all over the "slice through people and animals with talon claws BS."

When the XP3s are fulled expanded they are much wider in diameter than Fail Safe bullets. I guess that's what most hunters like---.

I just saw the test in American rifleman of the XP3 in Africa. While some of the bullets looked good some did not expand and others looked to have been bent with little expansion.
over all not very impressive.
What say you?

I am curious enough to try so I bought a box of 180/300 WSM.
I like the hollow point design because I have had good luck and performance with Hornady 120 hollow points from a 25-06.

I'm just wondering if they are going to cost as much as the MX from barnes... a buck a bullet.

Yikes.
