In the recent past there was a thread discussing 6X binoculars.
I am considering a set for turkey hunting and am wondering which ones you guys like. I have not found that thread so I'm asking.

Thanks,

Jim

The Leupold Yosemite 6x30's are about the best deal going in 6x binoculars.

I've got both the yo's and katmai in 6x. Good stuff both.

I have a pair of Steiners in 6x for 24 years now. I find them to be the most useful thing for deer hunting in the Woods of East Haddam. My guess the ones you buy today are a bit better do to the coatings on the lenses.

If you can find some Minox 6.5X32 IF they are wonderful. Not to everybodys liking as they are indivdual fixed focus. For myself I have not found anything better.

I totally agree on the Minox. I have two pairs but had to get help from Doug to get me a second pair after they stopped offering them. So I guess our Minox suggestion isn't worth much. They say the Leu Yosemite is a fantastic bargain.

Crockettnj.

Are the Katmai enough better than the Yosematies to justify the price difference?

Thanks,

Jim

Rug3,

I compared a few with the Leupold. The eyecups were very flimsy to me, but the optics were nice. I purchased the Vortex Rapor 6.5X32. They weigh 19 ounces if that is important.

The now discontinued Vortex Viper 6X32 were excellent binos. Here is what Ilya Koshkin said about them on his website Optics Thoughts, "I like low magnification binoculars, they offer exceptionally steady and relaxed view in a small and light package. The Viper is the best 6x binocular on the market and you will be amazed how well you can see with these." You can find his detailed review at:

+1 Why did they drop them from their lineup?? confused

They're still available on Ebay at a reasonable price, I think I paid $279 for mine off Doug.

I believe this 6x32 Viper was replaced by the Viper HD?

Probably because 6x doesn't sell as well as higher powers. My humble guess.

+1 on the Viper 6x32. Very nice glass. Eagle Optics has them in stock for $275. http://www.eagleoptics.com/binoculars/vortex/vortex-viper-6x32-binocular

I like to give my business to Doug so I'll be checking with him previous to purchase.

I like to not carry any more weight then necessary and a few ounces of weight saving, especially when around my neck, is very appealing. Binoculars that will fit in a 6X6 pocket while turkey hunting would be an added benefit.

Anyone here had both the Vortex and Katmai?

Thanks

Jim

My own choice was the Katmai based on ergonomics and availability. In the price range I wasn't going to agonize beyond good enough. I might well have picked another one given a chance to stack them all but I didn't find much in stock and never two to stack. The Katmai are good enough for me.

For more power and bigger objectives at higher prices I like to think I'd be more discerning but mostly I just spend all I can afford with Doug and that works too.

I have the Yosemite's and for the $59 I paid for them they are great value. However, the build quality is simply just not the best, but for $59 it is just fine. Any of the Vortex offerings would be great. I think the Vortex Fury line had a 6x32, too. While not a 6x, the newer Swift 7x36 Eaglet has the latest coatings and is a nice binocular especially when considering its size. HOWEVER, I haven't seen one for a decent price in a long time. I'd call Doug. You never know what he might have in the shop.

I find the 6x30 Leupold Yosemite binos just about the best hunting binocular for the deer woods I have ever used. The optics quality my not be on a par with some of the best Euro or Japanese glass, but it is more than adequate. My 8x42's might be better in open country or when I can carry them in a day pack, but for glasses that will hang around my neck all day without being too annoying, those Yosemites are just the ticket for the thicket!

I've read good reviews on the Eagle Optics Denali 6x32 and got to look at a set at a local pawn shop.
Pretty nice inexpensive binos. May have to pick them up.

I'll speak to using the binocs for turkey hunting rather than the deer woods. I've trashed a pair of Yo's in one season turkey hunting. I'm harder on gear during turkey season as I run and gun a lot and try all types of sneaking up on birds. Can't have binoculars that you are worried about getting banged up. I've used my Viper 6x32's for two turkey seasons now and they are an outstanding value, and are tough enough for me. Only thing is, I don't know if you can fit them into a 6x6 pocket.
