What are some opinions on the Eotech HWS with the 3x or 4x magnifier? In other words, is it worth the $500 + price for the magnifier? I've got to admit I don't like the off set - it seems awkward but maybe it just takes some getting used to.

You're right, it is awkward. The answer is simple, if you want magnification, don't get an EOTech. Get an ACOG or regular commercial scope.

I wouldn't go that far. They have their place. I shot Doc's AR in Texas at Pat's place. He is running a Aimpoint M3 with a magnifier. I liked the magnifier.

The problem isn't when you're using the magnifier, it's when you have it flipped to the side. Eotech actually came out with a semifix but didn't put it into production because the military didn't like it. It rotated the magnifier 180d under spring pressure and brought it up next to the reddot.

I've been running a Larue "po boy" ~2x magnifier in concert with my aimpoint comp m3 recently and I'm liking it a lot for field use. Lots more than I thought. The Larue tipover mount works really well and is easy to switch in and out of position while the carbine is mounted. I'm liking it well enough that I'm probably going to commit to leaving it on the whole time during my next Vickers carbine class.

However, for $500, I'd be looking at low power illuminated variable scopes like the Leupold firedot. I'm not recommending that because I don't have experience with it, just saying you're getting close enough in price to start looking at that type of scope. FWIW, the gold standard in that type of scope is the S&B Shortdot.
