Question. I have a later model C clip fed rifle in 22-250. The clip which came with the rifle states three or four calibers it is satisfactory for, including as best I can remember, 308, 250-3000, 243 and possibly one other caliber. But, it definately does not say it's for 22-250. Is this the correct clip, or did Savage make one specific for 22-250?

savage calls it a clip.actually it is a clip when it is loaded and in your pocket. but once installed it becomes the rifle's magazine... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

A CLIP is just that: an item that CLIPS together otherwise loose rounds of ammunition. A MAGAZINE is a spring-loaded feeding device for a firearm.

Okay wise-a$$ splain to me the M1 clip, when it is out of the rifle it is a clip, when it is insertered into the magazine well (and yes it is the magazine well in the reciever) on a Garand it is known as a magazine. Hubert is correct, quit being such a damn pecker-head. The only reason I know is that I was an armorer for the Army for a few years. The Magazine for an M-16 is also called a clip, check out the TM manual for one. Quit being so friggin anal. Les

I am usually just a reader and learner, but I couldn't agree more with Les.

Your qualifications as an "armorer" don't help either. Please see my explanation of a clip and see if that reconciles with the definition and purpose of a Garand enbloc clip. If necessary, have an adult read it to you. Thanks.

Does it really matter as long as the reader knows what you are talking about? Just for the heck of it I searched and found numerous definitions for both clip and magazine and they are pretty much interchangeable. I found this definition from Wordnet search: clip: cartridge holder: a metal frame or container holding cartridges; can be inserted into an automatic gun. Kinda vague and could be read either way.

You shouldn't care. Why would anyone expect you to? I don't. There are many posters here that are very knowlededgable. You are one of them. All of the rest who really know their stuff are very courteous and helpful even when someone knows less. You seem to delight in throwing darts. I guess people who know anything are particularly aggravating to those of you who know everything.

Give it up guys... otherwise we might get back the squad automatic weapon discussion!!!! <shudder!>
Popular usage, which is what I consider as counting here, puts Johnny wrong.
Literal usage makes Johnny right.
As an example, here's Wikipedia:
"A magazine(also called a mag) is an ammunition storage device within or attached to a firearm. The magazine may be integral to the firearm (fixed) or removable (detachable)... Some magazines can in turn be loaded by a clip; contrary to the common misconception, 'clip' and 'magazine' are not synonymous".
Can we talk about something fun now?
