I presently have 2 Savage 99 rifles. A 1923 vintage take down in .300 and a 1936 solid frame also in .300.
I am curious about the letter stamped on the trigger bow/lever boss. The take down has an S and the solid has what appears to be a Q.
Would someone tell me what these letters mean?
I'm not a collector, I'm a shooter. but I would like to know.
Thanks,
Danindayton
As far as I know, prior to 1949 the lever boss code only identified the guns as having been inspected. Each inspector had his own letter. From 1949 through 1970 the code was inspected to also include an identifier for year of manufacture.
