So far The Commissary is the clear winner. I'll have to try the others and report back. I'll get the dry rub ribs at Corkys.

I'm in Memphis for a work trip and have had some ridiculously good BBQ. Sun - Pulled pork sandwich, beans & slaw, sweet tea at Tops BBQ. Mon - Pulled pork sandwich, beans, slaw & deviled egg, sweet tea and coconut pie at The Commissary. Tues - Half rack of ribs (wet), slaw, corn bread, unsweetened tea at Old Timers. .... - Next up, Central BBQ, The Rendezvous, and Corkys... From what I've tasted, the BBQ sauce is darker than KC style, with more brown sugar and smoke. The hospitality has been outstanding. Not what I'm used to experiencing in SoCal. Good thing I'm only here for 2 weeks. I'd have a serious weight issue! Eric Just because you're eating in Memphis doesn't mean you're eating Memphis Style BBQ. Kansas City Style is generally the sweetest that I've tasted. Memphis Style isn't as sweet. St. Louis Style bridges the gap between the two. I don't think there are any other styles worth mentioning.

Saying 'southern BBQ' is like saying 'German sausage,' not very descriptive.
BTW, skip the Rendezvous and add Neely's Interstate BBQ instead. Lots of variations in "southern bbq" but at it's roots it's all smoked pork, low and slow. You can find beef, but southern is mostly pork. You can't go to Memphis on a BBQ quest and ignore Rendezvous. It's not my first choice either, but it sure ain't bad, and it's a landmark.

I like the Flying Saucer down around Beale St. They have a very large beer selection. Last time on Beale St I got some gator gumbo. Beale can be fun, and a good place to get knifed at the same time! Last time I was there I had to fight with a stoned hooker to keep my pants on, in the middle of the day standing on the sidewalk.. OP,you should check this place out if you have time to Anyone know the name of the BBQ joint thats right in front of the tracks in Germantown? Used to get a lot of take out from there, but I cant remember the name of it..It was excellent tho.

If you get the chance, drop by Tom's on Getwell. The rib tips are great but everything I've ever had there is too. Not to be outdone by the Memphis joints, just across the border in Mississippi off of I-55 (immediately to the right when you get off at Goodman Rd.), there is a place called Memphis Barbecue Co. It is a newer joint that is a collaboration effort between two former world champions. Enjoy.

The wife and I are heading up to Memphis for a weekend getaway. It has been 6 years since we went up there. I can still taste those ribs from the Rendezvous. We will top it off with an evening on Beale Street.

There are a lot of things wrong with Memphis and I don't mind speaking out on those matters, but barbecue isn't one of them....grin

I spent 4 years working there (next to the bridge going over to Mud Island) and it was without a doubt the best BBQ I've ever had.
That said, a man can only take so much Elvis. I've had Elvis pump gas for me, bag my groceries and make me a sausage biscuit.
