My boss wants a AR-10 as personal defense weapon for his home. He wants a Red Dot sight on it. Which one would you buy? reflex264

The only one I have any experience with is the DPMS LR308. One friend has the rifle and the carbine, and another friend has the rifle. They all shoot sub MOA.

My wife just picked out a DPMS LR-308 AP4. It has the adjustable stockable stock and a detachable carry handle. The barrel is 16" and it feels good in your hands. With the carry handle removed it has a flat top Picatinny rail for mounting sights/optics. Really like that it came with sling swivels and two 20 round magazines. We haven't shot it yet but my buddy who is a weapons instructor with the Air Force stripped it down and he said it is very nicely put together as far as size and fit of components. Also, it has a forward assist and a dust cover on the ejection port.

I have a family member with a DPMS Panther LR 308 with a 24 inch bull barrel. I absolutely love it. Very accurate right out of the box with factory ammo. They can get to 1/2 MOA with a good scope & handloads. A lot of people complain about the factory trigger, but if you don't have a "flinching" problem & just squeeze it off steady, it is fine. They come with two 19 round mags. Prices are good & customer service seems to be good.... So I would reccomend DPMS, however, I would not reccomend the above model for home self defense because it is too large & heavy. It is a long range shooter...& a good one!

Well, there is only one AR-10 and that's from Armalite. But if you are looking at an AR in .308 type caliber, then you have the AR-10 from Armalite as one format and the DPMS .308 as the other format. Each format has other companies making stuff analogous to it. Which ever one you get, you need to get the proper mags and uppers and so on.

Can't answer without knowing a budget.
Yeah, a 308 is definitely going to destroy his & his family's ears. Has he considered a shotgun?

If you have an AR10 with an M4 stock, you might want to change it out. The sharp checkering on the butt can be brutal if you're just wearing a t-shirt.
